transferring FTM data from Mac to PC
Getting together next week with an acquaintance to assist in
transferring Family Tree Maker data from Mac to PC. Don't
know what version of FTM.
Are there any issues? Is there a 'best' way to do it?
TIA

The Mac won't care if the drive is formatted for a PC. Make sure the
data files have the extensions to the file names expected by the PC.

I am told that the s/w purchased can run on Mac or Windows.
Not sure if it is loaded on PC yet.
Just out of interest, why would a GEDCOM be necessary if the
data files can be migrated. My understanding is the GEDCOM
is an optional backup suitable for sharing with other
Geneology programs. WOuld it not make as much sense to get
the software and 'original' data files loaded onto the PC
and then proceed from there?

Because so few programs will run on every machine available, you need
some common, plain-vanilla way to share stuff. GEDCOM is it -- not
perfect by any means, but loads better than retyping 300 people and notes.
Also, because newer versions of programs have features old ones didn't
have. Moving forward from version 1 to version 2 is always possible,
but moving backward from version 3 to version 2 isn't.
and because meanwhile, back at the factory, they've released v 5.1.2 for
Mac, v 8.3.9 for *ix, and are finishing v 6.43 for PC.
*IF* the program that created the files will run on the new computer, by
all means, install it, and open your data that way. You can then update
the program and it should work OK with the old datafiles. Personally, I
wouldn't hold my breath on that *if*, but I'm twice-bitten. (g)

Ran into some issues on getting data from one machine to the

Have learned a lot about Macs which is info I doubt I will
ever use again.
I knew that GEDCOM was to overcome the 'but I don't want to
open your data file' issue. She seems to be happiest staying
with what she knows (Family Tree maker), so the only
remaining issue will be getting the data from Mac to PC.
Since the version of software (FTM) will be a newer version,
she ought to be able to open it directly.
Thanks all your help.
