transferring FTM data from Mac to PC

Legg inn av Rex's Mom » 29. april 2005 kl. 13.59

Getting together next week with an acquaintance to assist in
transferring Family Tree Maker data from Mac to PC. Don't
know what version of FTM.

Are there any issues? Is there a 'best' way to do it?

TIA

A PC formatted thumb-drive might provide the simplest solution. Put both
FTM data files and GEDCOM files on the thumb drive.

The Mac won't care if the drive is formatted for a PC. Make sure the
data files have the extensions to the file names expected by the PC.

Thanks to you both for your answers/info. Not entirely sure

of the current setup, so will be 'winging it'. Don't think
emailing the attachment will work too well as the person in
question is on dial-up. Also not sure if the Mac in question
has a USB port and/or if thumb drive owned.

I am told that the s/w purchased can run on Mac or Windows.
Not sure if it is loaded on PC yet.

Just out of interest, why would a GEDCOM be necessary if the
data files can be migrated. My understanding is the GEDCOM
is an optional backup suitable for sharing with other
Geneology programs. WOuld it not make as much sense to get
the software and 'original' data files loaded onto the PC
and then proceed from there?

Do you know the name or model of the Mac?

Because so few programs will run on every machine available, you need
some common, plain-vanilla way to share stuff. GEDCOM is it -- not
perfect by any means, but loads better than retyping 300 people and notes.

Also, because newer versions of programs have features old ones didn't
have. Moving forward from version 1 to version 2 is always possible,
but moving backward from version 3 to version 2 isn't.

and because meanwhile, back at the factory, they've released v 5.1.2 for
Mac, v 8.3.9 for *ix, and are finishing v 6.43 for PC.

*IF* the program that created the files will run on the new computer, by
all means, install it, and open your data that way. You can then update
the program and it should work OK with the old datafiles. Personally, I
wouldn't hold my breath on that *if*, but I'm twice-bitten. (g)

This is really for Ron and Cheryl:

have now finally been to the site and her software will only
run on Mac, not PC, so she has to buy new software anyway.

Ran into some issues on getting data from one machine to the
other, but are working on a solution.

Have learned a lot about Macs which is info I doubt I will
ever use again.

I knew that GEDCOM was to overcome the 'but I don't want to
open your data file' issue. She seems to be happiest staying
with what she knows (Family Tree maker), so the only
remaining issue will be getting the data from Mac to PC.
Since the version of software (FTM) will be a newer version,
she ought to be able to open it directly.

Thanks all your help.

make certain she gets the single CD in a flat pack
best value

FTM 2005 will not dissappoint
I swear by it

easy web site from FTM2005
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi? ... o&id=I1111

====================

and export a gedcom from FTM2005 and upload it

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=:3011593

the url style db=:1234567
shows it was uploaded from ancestry.com or ancestry.co.uk

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=hughw36

db=yourhandel

is made a gedcom from
http://wc.rootsweb.com/

I made this for a Danish friend
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi? ... recno=2344

her children and grand children are Living

she is here
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi? ... o&id=I1111

and her late husband
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi? ... o&id=I2405

=====================

searched for John Smith
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=:a1224

url type db=:a12345 is from the Old World Connect

Entries: 3460 Updated: Sat Aug 25 17:08:23 2001 Contact: Unknown

all may be dleted by their owner but you have to log on by the correct route

You may use the online sotware to create handy web pages

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com ... other.html

started off as
http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi? ... 6&id=I0290

which I then edited in Netscape Composer
stripping out the links

and rewritng the first paragraph because the entries
in FTM2005 as "friendship"s
all turn up as "marraiges" inthe gedcom

(my mother was only marreid once of course)

I reported that bug about 3 years ago to the FTM people

Can your favourite family tree program correctly distinguish between
the variousd types of relationships between couples when exported as a
gedcom?
