Medical history research

Legg inn av Gjest » 16. desember 2004 kl. 5.07

I have been searching for online resources that would help me trace my
family's medical records, and have found nothing useful. I'd be
interested to hear information from others on how to proceed.

My parents are both dead, and lived and died in the UK. I am currently
in the US, so I would have to do any enquiries by mail or email. I'm
not sure what records are even publicly available, or how I would
enquire after them.

Thanks for any help.

Mike

Most if not all medical records that I know of require a release from the

individual that the records pertain to. Usually only the patient's doctors,
hospitals and the insurance companies have access to those files unless a
court order is issued.

Since you're needing British records, you'll do better on
soc.genealogy.britain (or closest title; popularly known as GenBrit)

As I understand it, you'll have to buy the death certificates to see the
CoD.

Standard medical records may only be retained for a limited period (8-10
years) after death or leaving the UK.
There is some information which may be of help at
http://www.ruh-bath.swest.nhs.uk/depart ... record.htm
A search for "uk medical records retention time" or similar produces
potentially useful information.

hospital records usually deposited at a county recors office (archive)
but closed so only available as selected copies
You have to make your request in writing

the start pont for medical genealogy is a collection of the death
certificates
