GenoPro free - opinions?

What's the current consensus of opinion about the pros and cons of the
GenoPro shareware? I've had it recommended to me, but b4 I download it I
thought I'd consult you experienced folk :-)
Cheers,
Mike.

I've got Version 1.71, and there may be later improved versions.

I've found it useful for occasional things like descendants of a couple
that married (~1783 - one was my ggg-grandfather's first cousin) that
I collated from bits and pieces from the web, and wanted to look at as a
single chart (so that when distant cousins contact me, I have some idea
who they are <grin>) and send to one of the younger members of that line
for basic checking. The chart included parents and siblings of some
spouses, and some cousins marrying siblings.

With lots of cousins to arrange, the programme may need help
straightening out the topology.

My charts end up with small print and lots of empty space.

It's doesn't produce my favorite result (currently I use PowerPoint
<grin>), but it enables include-all charting.

Years ago, I tried it, and it installed some very persistant spyware on
my Windows PC. Maybe they've stopped doing that, but I thought I'd
mention it.

If you do install it, please do a spyware scan before and after and let
us know if it adds anything, if you would be so kind?

No syware, I have both the retail version the latest beta, the beta has

genopmaps, rather like having a stack of pages where you can hyperlink
between them and jump from one to another. Interesting program, well
worth a look.

Sorry, I'm not a computerhead and am not sure how to do a spyware scan
-) - will my Norton Antivirus scan detect spyware when I install it?
Thanks,
Mike

I suggest you google the word spyware and pick at least one of the

removal tools. Counterspy from http://www.sunbelt-software.com is geting
some good press lately but it's $20 US with a 15 Day free trial. There's
plenty of free trial anti-spyware stuff but results are mixed. Good seem
to be Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D. Problem is many of the free ones actually
end up putting mal-ware on your machine so read revues in reputable
publications first.

Nope, spyware and viruses are two very different things.
If you'll forgive the copy/paste (it's from my own site, so I guess it's
OK, I just don't feel like re-writing it)

- Get rid of the spyware.

Spyware can range from annoying, to outright dangerous to your finances.
At the most benign end of the spectrum, it tracks the websites you go
to, sends that information to someone, somewhere, and they use that
information to decide what spam or popups to send you. On the more
sinister end, are "keyloggers" which are somewhere between spyware and
viruses, which can capture your passwords, your credit card numbers, and
other personal information which could be used to steal from you (or as
you...) On a more noticable level, spyware can make your web browsing
vvvveeeeerrrrryyyyyy sssslllloooowwww. When your system is busy
sending your internet viewing history to someone in who-knows-where, and
busy downloading those popup ads, it's not getting the information
you're asking for. They're stealing the resources of your computer and
bandwidth to send you advertisement, or worse.

I suggest Adaware from http://www.lavasoft.us, which is a free spyware removal
tool. Beware of imitations, lots of people make "spyware removal tools"
which only remove some, or worse yet, just add their own and proclaim
your system safe. Lavasoft is trustworthy. Another great but harder to
learn tool is "Spybot Search and Destroy". Again, watch the name
closely.

Thanks,
Mike

Hope this helps. I do have a Windows box and could do a test install,
but either way, you'd be well served to at least install AdAware from
http://www.lavasoft.us to see just how much crap you've already got on your
system. Prepare to be annoyed, but getting those cleaned off will make
things run more nicely and more securely.
