Registering FTM
My cousin is trying to register her FTM, but keeps getting an error message.
The FTM CD says it is V11, but when the program comes up it says it is
FTM2005. When she tries to register, she gets this message,"It appears that
either you are not connected to the internet or your system is behind a
firewall which is denying FTM access to the internet" She was online and
says that she does not have a firewall. Can anyone help?

The firewall that has existed in XP used to be OFF by default --
SP2, as I recall, turns it on by default.

If she's on an XP system, and ran the SP2 update, she probably
has a firewall of sorts.

Yup. It's sort of a firewall.
Sort of. But the real point is that she should call FTM's support and
get help, as I'm sure they've dealt with this. If their advise is to
turn off XP's firewall, then, well, that's another reason to avoid
FTM. I'd be interested in hearing what they tell her.

It doesn't help her, but I managed to register my copy from behind both XP
and Norton's firewall....

She is using Windows 98 and doesn't have a firewall. she decided not to call
them as it would be too expensive. She has sent them an email.

That error message could be totally bogus and not indicative of the real

Win98 would not natively have MS Internet Explorer 6.0. There was another
poster recently with a similar release level of FTM, unfortunately we don't
know the final outcome, but that installation was insisting that MSIE6.0 be
installed and that installation was failing from the FTM installation CD. If she
doesn't have MSIE 6.0 on her system, then download & install it. It *does* work
as I have a Win98 system here with it.

Just another possibility. Many people have a router such as a Linksys. This
has a built in firewall which might block the TCP/IP port used by FTM and
might not be considered a firewall by some users.
I had a similar problem with PalmOne.com - All other downloads work just
fine but I had to disconnect the router and plug my PC directly into the
cable modem to get the downlod from Palm. That was much easier than trying
to get an email support guy to understand and find out what TCP/IP port was
used by their program.
Anyway it probably doesn't apply in your case but ... FWIW all the same

Yes. Also, there are some serious security flaws in IE 5.x that MS probably

Even better would be if FTM lets you use firefox or another secure, non-IE
browser...

One of these intruders has replaced the bit of software that

BTW FTM 2005 was = FTM v11 and is now FTM v12 (confused?)
