Outlook Express News Reader Problems
Hi All,
This is not a genealogy question, but it is giving us trouble in accessing
the genealogy news groups, as well as other news groups.
We have been using Outlook Express for many years, but in the past two weeks
so, we have started having the following problem.
Normally when we access a news group, and the message headers are
downloaded, we get a note at the bottom of the screen which reads for
example, "10 message(s), 10 unread". We then proceed to read those messages
whose subjects interest us, then go to the next news group. Our options are
set to download only new headers, and when we leave the news group, we have
the option set to show all messages as having been read, so that when we
come back to that news group, we have the option set to show only unread
messages, and therefore get the new messages only.
Lately, we get the message as the bottom of the screen which reads, for
example, "10 message(s), 10 unread, 4 not downloaded." There seems to be
nothing we can do to get these 4 messages downloaded. The only option we
see that we have is to go to Edit, Get next 300 headers. But this does not
do the trick. Can someone tell us what is actually happening, or who we
could contact to get an answer.
Thanks a lot for any info.

I think you meant Tools-Get next . . . , but no matter. When it says

Now question: Suppose you have that 10, 10, & 4 situation. What happens if you
read the 10 or mark them read. Do you still see the 4 not downloaded like 0, 0,
& 4 per above? Does this problem ever occur in the genealogy newsgroups? or in
some other newsgroups that you follow? Would those occassionally have

Ooops! Yes, I meant Tools-Get next 300 messages.
That is the way I understand it.
Yes, that is true. And Kathy Tabb did manage to get a post in just before
you, indicating she is having the same or similar problem.
As I indicated, whenever I leave the newsgroup, I use the option of marking
them all as read. And when I click on the next news group, the first news
group still shows 4 in blue with opening and closing parenthesis right
behind the title of the news group. If I go back to the first news group,
it then says 0,0,4, and the blue parenthetical 4 is still there, and my
screen says "There are no items in this view. Some items may be hidden
because a view is applied." And the option I have on View is "Hide read
messages." That is the option I use on all my normal reading of news
groups, unless I want to look back at messages whose headers I have already
downloaded and read.
I am currently reading 10 genealogy news groups, 2 travel news groups, and 1
birding news group. I believe I have had this happen on every one of these
news groups.
None of the news groups that I monitor are supposed to have attachments.
But, certainly, someone may be posting with attachments as some sort of
spam, and my antivirus may not be allowing me to even download the header.
But, I doubt that.
I had been running Norton Antivirus for many years, but changed about 3
months ago to AVG Antivirus. But, this problem only started a couple of
weeks ago.
Thanks for taking a look at this for me. I appreciate any ideas I can get
on the subject. Just to clear up the news group listings, I have used the
option to "Catch Up", which wipes out the blue parenthetical numbers
relating to the "Messages not downloaded".
I just don't want to be missing any posts, especially those I am actively
working on.

download messages over a certain size, or those selected by certain kill

Alternatively: OE might be basing its count on the highest
message number downloaded. Messages might have been canceled (erased
from the server) leaving gaps in the message numbers. If you'd started
at message #XYZ, and ended at #XYZ+10, but four messages had been
canceled, maybe they are being counted as "not downloaded". {I also had
to set Agent, for one of the three servers I use, to "server creates
messages out of order" to ensure that I didn't miss any messages that
filled in gaps}

have a looked at your settings,

To specify what you want to download
You can make all messages, only headers, or only new messages available for
offline viewing by changing the synchronization settings for IMAP, HTTP, or
news server folders.
1.. From the Folders list, select an IMAP server, an HTTP server, or a
news server.
2.. In the main window, select one or more folders or newsgroups.
3.. Click Settings, and then click to change the setting to one of the

Re: Outlook Express News Reader Problems
Joe after further checking the way to resolve this problem is to, assuming
that you show "New Messages Only" against a particular news group.
By changing this to "All Messages". This will allow all the messages to be
downloaded. up to any restriction that you may have put
within tools< option < read tab, which "Specifies whether to download the
chosen number of messages when viewing a newsgroup or to download all
messages in the newsgroup."
I hope this will help.

Re: Outlook Express News Reader Problems
I have used OEX for about 10 years to read newsgroups - used to be Internet
Mail - I cant reproduce what you are saying. I understand what you mean but
cant reproduce it.
I have on occassion had times when I cant see the unread email and nothing I
do fixes it - I generally read up on all I can, delete the account and
download all new messages. If all else fails this might be an option.
Unsubscribing and resubscribing might help but you have to download all the
messages again.
Once I have downloaded all the messages again I hit catch up and hope that
the one or two emails I missed were not my 3rd cousin twice removed who had
30 seconds to send an email to me with her phone number and will never log
on again.

I mentioned mozilla above, as this is the one I have experience with, but I
guess you could have a look at Opera and a number of other alternatives.
For the clever guys: yes I post this from a Linux machine, I work most of
the time on it, but I still have Windows on my network.
The issue at hand is to solve an Outlook Express issue.

Opera has banners.
Mozilla is an open source project. This means someone can find the
code to make his own browser. Until now, I have not seen any such
home made browser but it is likely we will see some of them (again,
be careful if you don't know if you can trust the author/source). But
Mozilla/Firefox have skins, i.e. you can change how they look like and

Beside that, it also saves you somewhat 80% of worm, spyware etc. problems.

Hi All,
This is not a genealogy question, but it is giving us trouble in accessing
the genealogy news groups, as well as other news groups.
