[Q] Web-based Genealogy Applications

Legg inn av Eric » 18. april 2005 kl. 14.52

I was just wondering what existed (and what was actually good) in terms
of web-based genealogy applications.

Basically, I was looking for an application which would allow me and my
family members to easily collobrate in putting together a complete
family tree and figured a web-based application would be a good way to
go.

I did find this:

http://www.tufat.com/script1.htm

Do any others exist?

YMMV, but I find phpGedView to be just what the doctor ordered. In my case,
I'm running it plus Apache as a locally hosted webserver/application. Others
choose to use hosting services who provide phpGedView support. You can
find more information and a list of sites that use phpGedView at:

http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net

Looks like a wonderful application.

Thank you.

Hi Eric,

I run treefic.com, a commercial site that provides exactly this. If you
have a look at the site you'll find a few demo pages that will give you
a good idea of what we offer. I hope you'll agree that our tree
diagrams are some of the best available from a web-based application.
Although we charge for our service you may find that it works out
cheaper than buying web space in which to run your own phpgedview, for
example.

Best wishes and good luck with your project.

After playing around with phpgedview & the tufat one, here is my brief
review:

tufat offers far easier entry of data, which is important for
collaborative entry of data, especially when some family members are as
well versed in computer/internet usage.

phpgedview offers far more in terms of viewing the family tree
information (more charts, etc.). But I found data entry difficult and
the menu style interface annoying.

http://cristal.inria.fr/~ddr/GeneWeb/
The program is free because it was developped with french public
funds.
It is gnu-licensed, for windows, mac and unix and was created by
Daniel de Rauglaudre, investigator at INRIA (french National Institute
for Research in Informatics and Automation)
Actually a commercial organization, GeneaNet is working web-based with
GeneWeb
and accepting free accounts. They have a system of two passwords and
it is possible to allow family members to collaborate fully or only in
their branches.
http://www.geneanet.org/geneweb.php3?lang=en
You can work directly on-line or download the programm, work on your
computer and upload directly from the program or through a gedcom file
(usefull if you already have data in a program that can export gedcom
files).
Two notes:
1 - As it is a non-standard program - it is not a database - it is not
very intuitive, but it works well and fast (M. de Rauglaudre have
something like 980.000 names in his file).
2 - As said, GeneaNet is a commercial organisation and nobody knows
for sure if free hosting will last forever.
