Multnomah County Pioneer Obituaries A-I > Peter Stabel Hansen April 14, 1929; Oregonian, p 28 (photo) "Early Rail Man Dies"One of the pioneer railroad builders of the Pacific northwest, Peter Stabel Hansen, 80, died yesterday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Albert Barbo, 1116 Henry avenue, Eastmoreland.Mr. Hansen, a civil engineer, and son of a noted Norwegian family of churchmen and judges, came to America in 1882 on a hunting trip. He liked the country and after a short visit in Norway in 1884 returned here to live, marrying Florence Strout of Portland, who died in 1917.He first was an engineer with the Great Northern when that line was built through Montana, then transferring to Corvallis, Or., when a line was constructed from that town to the coast. For 14 years then he was divisional engineer of Oregon for the Southern pacific, building the big bridge in the Siskiyous at tunnel No. 9, the old steel bridge over the Clackamas, and many others.He had charge of a section from Arlington down when the North Bank was constructed; he was engineer for the old Mount Hood railway, which was built from Portland to Bull Run, and he made the surveys for the United railway, now the Oregon Electric.He had charge of considerable work for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul in Idaho, and built most of that section of the Columbia river highway between Bridal Veil and Cascade Locks. More recently he was with the state highway commission of Idaho.Mr. Hansen is survived by two brothers, a minister and a judge, in Norway, and a sister there. Two children, Mrs. Barbo and Harold V. Hansen, reside in Portland. A daughter, Mrs. Florence Holzheimer, died recently. Funeral services are set tentatively for Tuesday at the Portland Crematorium.
