Has anyone tried the new software addon for FTM 2005, GenSmarts? If so,
care to comments on its usefulness. It's supposed to analyze you files and
suggest research areas and why. any thoughts on it.

Thank you both for your replies. I just might give it a try. I have 2900+
in my database, so any help is locating holes is good!

Hi Charlie
I have the Gensmarts software .... Its OK BUT .....
The research locations are somewhat limited and rely on Gensmarts themselves
to put the locations into the database. They say that the next version will
allow you (the individual) to put in your own locations, which will be
excellent. Till then unless you are a member of 1837Online, Ancestry.com
or any other U.S. "paying" genealogy Co the only useful research locations
will remain the LDS's family search site and a few UK gov sites like
National Archives or Scotlands People......
That said ... I think on the whole it is worth the money as It takes the
data you already have on your database and suggests generally what you need
to research to "fill in" the gaps, and having over 1800 people on my tree it
is useful to see what you're missing ...
I use Legacy myself and it reads Legacy files directly into the GenSmarts
programme - I presume that the FTM version is something similar.
It also produces a printed report if you wish.
Hope this helps ....

I have GenSmarts and it's OK, but limited for me as I don't have any US
ancestors. You can get a trial version (that I think from memory only shows a
portion of the suggestions generated) from their website. That would give
you the best idea if it's worth it for you.

One warning - don't assume that it considers all the sources that seem to be
listed in the software! eg scotland's people is on the list of research
locations but it is not yet implemented. Very frustrating.

Re: FTW 2005 GenSmarts?
I purchased the generic program, i.e., not specific to FTM 2005. I use
FTM05, and it reads the data file with no trouble. No, it hasn't
knocked down all my remaining brick walls, but it has been useful in
making suggestions, and I expect that it will become more useful as
more resources are added.
