I'm using an older version of FTM (4.4) and created a family tree on my
father's side and one on my mother's side. Is it possible to combined these
trees into one? Unable to find any information in the HELP file.
Thanks, Ken

Hi! - I see you haven't had a response as yet. That will be fairly
straightforward. Open your mother's tree first, for example, and create a
Gedcom. Click File-Copy/Export FamilyFile-GEDCOM and give a name to the file
which will have a .ged extension.
Then open your father's tree. (make sure you have a separate backup of the file
as you will be changing it). Click File-Append/Merge Family File and give it
the file you just created.
You then need to Click People-Merge Duplicate Individuals as you probably have
your father & mother (and others) in both files. There you go. Feel free to ask
if this isn't clear.

Easiest would be to export both to GEDCOMs and then import them into a new

Re: Help with combining family trees
Steve and Bob thanks for responding. I tried both suggestions and nothing is
working. I created GEDCOM for each family. I do not have a File-Append/Merge
or at least I can't find it. It's not listed under file.
When I try to import from GEDROM the import area is grayed out.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks, Ken

I have version 7.5 and that's apparently something that was changed since your
version. That doesn't matter as you do have a way to Import which is what we are
looking for.
The quickest answer is that you have FTM open, but haven't created an FTM tree
file to Import into. We should rule that out first before looking for other
causes. Assuming that you have created a duplicate of your Father's file to
experiment with, is Import greyed out if you load his file? If it's not greyed
out, then use it to Import your Mother's GEDCOM and then do the people merge.
Let us know about all that and we'll take it from there.

Re: Help with combining family trees
I finally got it working. My Fathers file was open, I clicked on File
Copy/Export, Look In and found the GEDCOM for my Mother's file. I then
clicked on Append and then I got a window with all the names in my Mother's
file and I moved them to the right and then Merge. Everything seems to have
merged okay, except there are no notes. I don't what happened to them. I
have a lot of notes and glad I made these files to experiment with.
I'll play around with it for awhile and see what happens. At least I'm on
the right track.
Thanks, Ken

Re: Help with combining family trees
Are the notes in the GEDCOM file?
Since you are working with FTM version 4 I would say it is a good time to
give legacy a try.
Free download at
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com
In my opinion it has the best merge function going.
