Swiggum, Sviggum, Sviggo in Hafslo

Legg inn av gj25484 » 26. april 2016 kl. 19.27

Hello,

I am writing a book about some Norwegian-Americans at the turn of the 19th century and some of them came from the Sviggo farm in Hafslo. I will be visiting the area in July and was wondering if anybody might have some tips on researching or visiting this area. I have never been before. I will also be in Vik and Gulen in Sogn og Fjordane and the Fagernes area in Valders.

Any help will be appreciated!

Thanks!

Some of my ancestors were born on the Marheim farm in Hafslo, which is close to Svigggum in the same area. Therefore, I have done some research in these parts of Norway.

What I do not know is, exactly, what are you interested in? Books about these areas and the people living there at the turn of the 19th century? How to get there, or where to stay?

If you can be more precise as to what you are looking for, maybe someone can help you.

Yes, that would be helpful.

I am looking to visit the farm that they lived at, or at least see which one it is, and to see the church they attended or if there are any records to look at pertaining to their exact departure dates. I recently found the church records on digitalarkivet and they have been helpful. Maybe those are the only records of that event that exist.

Maybe there is somebody available to show me around?

Thanks!

You may find some useful information about the Sviggum farm(s) in

Lars E. Øyane og Terje Mikal Hasle Joranger: Gards- og ættesoge for Luster kommune Band VI Eikum Ytre-Høgi (Luster kommune 2008).

The book is in Norwegian, but has a summary in English for each of the farms.

The church the Sviggum people attended may have been Fet kyrkje

https://nn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fet_kyrkje_i_Sogn

or, more likely, Joranger kyrkje

https://nn.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joranger_kyrkje

Unfortunately, the information in Wikipedia is in Norwegian, but still it might be helpful.

A couple of years ago I wanted to see the Marheim farm, but unfortunately no one was there to help me. However, I talked to a nice lady on the nearby Sviggum farm, and maybe this is the way to do it: To go there and find a door to knock on, and hopefully the people there can give you the information you need after you have told them what you know about the area, the people and the history.

I wish you the best of luck with your studies.
