How to coordinate genealogical data

Legg inn av Gjest » 9. februar 2005 kl. 7.18

I'm looking for a way to coordinate genealogical data between my
various family members. Multiple people have typed in data and shared
it around and merged it together. I'm trying to find a way that we
as a family can share our efforts in a simple, accurate manner.

I've looked at various merging tools and some of them do a better job
than others, but none of them are what I'm looking for. I used PAF
Insight to do the merging of the initial mess that I started with and
went from 22K names down to about 13K names. This type of process
isn't something that I could do on a regular basis though. I need
something that I could do on a monthly basis with little effort on my
part.

For some background; I'm a software engineer, but most of the others
in the family are relative novices with computers. Most of us use PAF.

I've done a fair amount of Googling and reading, but haven't come
up with anything. Am I missing something or is there no good solution
for this type of problem?

If you shifted to Legacy (free to download), Intellishare might help.

(I've not tried it myself.)

Have you looked at Legacy's Intellishare?

Thank you for the excellent suggestion. It looks like a good piece of
software. I've installed it and will report back when I get a chance
to test how well the Intellishare feature works.

Friends, [email protected], countrymen, lend me your newsreaders:

PhpGedView allows you to put your family data online (not necessarily
for public viewing if that's not required) and registered users (ie.
your family) can login and edit the data but only you can review the
changes and decide whether it should be merged - at the touch of a
button.

Horrible front-end though.

It then becomes a horrible front-end with decoration and all W3C
compliance goes through the window. I think it already (from a
technical perspective) has the potential to be the best MySQL/PHP
software available. But it desperately needs a template engine that
allows total flexibility and a more intuitive interface. I considered
using Mambo (CMS) with the PhpGedView API to craft a superior front-end,
but it still would've been too much work...forcing me over to TNG for a
quick solution.

Another option would be to use phpGedView on your website - assuming you
have one ;-) . You can edit online (therefore only ONE database), the editor
updates the gedcom file for your family (and you can have multiple gedcom
files), allowing you to download a new gedcom to your desktop program (which
may become obsolete). You can find out more at
http://phpgedview.sourceforge.net/, and visit any number of sites using the
FREE open source application, including mine (http://www.kienowfamily.org/)

It's not as rich as a desktop application, but it is a great tool for
collaborating.
