Genealogy software list
I'm putting together a list of the principal items of software available
for genealogy. At this point, I'm checking through the main-stream
stuff, and may have time to do the utility "extras" (eg stand-alone
HTML generators)later.
Here's my present list - not exhaustive, not comprehensive. This is for
Australia, but I'd welcome news of any main program I might have missed.
If you have a reference URL, that would be good, too.
Cheers, and thanks in advance.

presentations and, as has been repeatedly said in these newsgroups, it's
the individual tastes that will cause us to choose one program over
another. I also can't find a scrollable list of the people. Perhaps I am
missing something, but all I see is that alphabetic scheme. Not my cup

What you are saying is that because it won't scroll through the names as

Since the scroll list is so important and determines whether a program is
good or worthless, write to the author he is extremly responsive.

Has LDS extensions. Plug-in architecture.
They say it slows down when you get over 10,000 individuals in the
database, but since I'm just starting and only have 200, it doesn't seem a
problem to me. I don't have a basis for comparison as its the only family
tracking program I've used, but I will say that it has me addicted to
doing family research in just a few weeks use.
Oh, and of course it is free software, as in beer and speech.

Hi Paul,
Have you seen Genota? It's an Australian written research manager
tool which allows for notes to be filed under categories, included
persons, address books, links to some of the family history software
packages, you can link to any file in your computer, and it is web
activated and does lots of stuff.
You can see it at http://www.genota.com

I said "available", which wasn't very clear. What I should have said was
"currently available", as in there to buy for the present generation.
If that's the case then you should remove Generations - apparently the last
place in the world that there were stocks for purchase was VicGUM in
Melbourne - those stocks are now gone and therefore Generations isn't
"currently available".

Ooops, a bit more (belated) reading shows that
Family Tree Magazine, December 2004, shows in
Eric Probert's column that TWR sold their last
copies.
So our Susia was CORRECT after all,
Question - do you put sauce on humble pie?

Hi Tom,
I wouldn't dream of suggesting you eat humble pie!! <vbg> Anyway I thought
that was the benefit of mailing lists / newsgroups etc. - different people
contribute information they have to hand and others may have more recent
information to contribute. How else would we learn?
I just think it's very nice of you to admit / comment on it - a lot of
people don't!
Now, about the sauce bit ......... I'm allergic to tomato sauce so my answer
would be an emphatic NO!!

Vietnam records added to GenealogyBuff.com
Hi all,
GenealogyBuff.com http://www.genealogybuff.com has
just added some Vietnam casualties data to the library
and is located at http://www.genealogybuff.com/misc/
It is however, searchable from the library page at
http://www.genealogybuff.com/library.htm
The data covers Army, Air Force, Marines, and Navy and
mainly covers casualties from 1961 to 1965.
Hope this helps.

Search and Replace
I am looking for a program that will do a "conditional" search and
replace...
My problem: I am putting the local protestant parish book into a genealogy
program... Now, over 8000 entries later
)), I want to add "reliegion =
protestant" IF the person was christened (i.e. has a date for the
christening) - on top of that I want to add the date of the christening to
"religion".
Any suggestions? I've been thinking of, if need be using Word's search and
replace function, but a) I have big arguments with it when searching and
replacing strings and b) I don't know what else it would do to my GEDCOM...
Thanks in advance.

the current version is still a DOS prog, with all consequences that has when
you are running a newer OS. I have run it from Win2K, and it basically
works, but keep a manual at hand since you need to remember a lot of Alt-A
, Ctrl-whatever stuff.
The data I have, have been entered by my late mother, so I am not sure how
these data got in there, but when I transfered these to Gramps, a lot of
problems came up:
there were quite a lot of data corruptions (double links most of it), but
more annoying is the way it handles names: a name is a single field, no
separate surname - christian name.
So when you export a GEDCOM file from it, the prog splits the name at the
first blank, ex. John James Smith comes out as christian name John ,
surname James Smith.
So be warned when you get info from such source
