Looking for information on Høidahl and Røste from Ålesund

I am an American with Norwegian lineage, and I do not speak Norwegian so I must post this in English.

I am working on some genealogy from one branch of my family. My great-grandmother was the daughter of Karl (or Carl) Johan Johannesen Høidahl (born 1859). My grandfather is now deceased, but when I was young, he told me Karl Johan was a ship captain, or a merchant sailor, and that his ship sank in a storm near New York City. We were told there is a statue of him somewhere, possibly in the Pacific Northwest. I believe he was somewhat important within the merchant sailor's organizations at the time. I believe he was born in Ålesund, but lived in Flekkefjørd. I was always told the Høidahl branch came from the Bergen area, and many of them spoke the Bergensk dialect. However, I have not been able to find any information about him, his ship, or his history. I am interested in finding more information on Karl (Carl) Johan Johannesen Høidahl if any is out there.

More information:
Siblings probably include Hans Martin Elias (1856), Johan Ludvig (1862), Mathias (1866), Berthe Marie (1869). Karl was married to Anne Sofie Nelsen, whose father was Nels or Nils Røste. I cannot find any information on Nels Røste, either. Karl's brother Mathias married Anne Sofie after Karl was lost at sea, and they moved to New Jersey and later New Hampshire. Mathias' death certificate lists their father as Johannes M. Høidahl, a shipbuilder from Ålesund. A Johanes Mortensen Høidahl is listed as "tømm." (carpenter) in Ålesund census, married to Marthe Lovise Hansdatter. Another document lists "Martinsen." The death certificate lists Marthe L. Hauge as mother's name. Mathias was a shipping clerk, but the other brothers seem to be carpenters, and my best guess is there is a history of carpentry or shipbuilding in the family.

I have found a listing for a Morten Hansen Høidal, or a Morten Johnsen Høidal who I suspect could be related. The family seems to be located in the Ålesund and Volda area. In researching this area I have learned that the Høydalen district includes many farms and locations with similar names, which is what makes this difficult for me.

I have had a difficult time tracing this branch of my family beyond these people. My assumption is that I am not searching for the right information, or the correct names. I know there are several possible spellings of Høidahl, Morten, Johannes, and other names, but I am having difficulty finding the appropriate information. My hope is that someone here can point me in a new or different direction so I can continue my research.

Thank you so much, Torodd! That has given me some of the assistance I was looking for. I had discovered some information on a Morten Hansson Botn who married Kari Larsdr. Høydalsdal, and this tells me this Morten Hansen is probably the same person. This helps me connect those people.

About Anne Sofie, daughter of Nils Røste: Do you know her approximate birth year?

There is a place in Volda called Røste, which would be a reasonable place for Karl Johan's wife to come from (or stem from) since his father was from Volda.

I believe she was born in 1860. She died in 1934 in New Hampshire. In the US, she was sometimes listed as Anna Sophia, A. Sophie, and other variations on the name. Her New Hampshire state death records list Nils G. Petersen, farmer, & Sarah Hansen as her parents. They are listed as being born in Norway. My grandfather always said her father was named Nels Røste, however. I believe her marriage records list her as Anne Sofie Nils Gabrielsdr., so perhaps he was Nils-Gabriel Petersen Røste, or Nils Gabrielsen, son of Gabriel Petersen, or something like that. It would not surprise me if she was from Volda. I think I saw a census record that suggests she and Carl/Karl lived in Liknæs at one point.

I am very curious where I might look to find out more information on Carl Johan Johannesen Høidahl's story. Our family stories say he was lost at sea in a shipwreck, and an 1885 census lists him (spelled as Karl) as “bortreist (away traveled).” My uncle inherited his sailor's trunk, but aside from that we have very few artifacts that point to his life. He feels more like a legendary figure than a real person.
