Searching For Living Relatives

I have been successful in tracing ancestors on this website but with the 1910 census being the newest available I seem to have run out of resources to find living relatives. My wife and I will be in Oslo and the Kongsberg area late this summer and still have hope that we'll find and meet relatives. I'm posting everything I have found in the hopes that someone will recognize my ancestors and be able to put me in touch with living relatives. Thank you for reading this.

My great grandfather left Skollenborg in 1875 for America. He had 7 brothers and sisters. Most of them came to America. Their parents names were Narve Hellickson Stengelsrud (1813-1880) and Eleanora Clausdatter Bjorndalen (1817-1899). In 1875 the family lived at Tubbe-Hotvet near Skollenborg. Narve and Eleonora moved to Åmot, Modum about 1884 to the farm Holo. Parish records show Narve was buried at Hedenstad Church near Skollenborg. Eleanora died at Holo in 1899 and buried at Heggen Church, Modum. The following is information I have been able to find on their two children who remained in Norway.

Marthe married Thor Ederklep (also listed as Tov), listed as a reastaurant-owner, and they had 3 children: Gustofa (1879), Nils (26.01.1883) and Elionore (1885). The family lived in Nymoens Torv in Kongsberg in 1885. When I follow Nils, I find him in a 1910 census for Kongsberg, living in Dyremyrgate, Gustofa is later called Gustava and married Halvor I. Ruud (1871). They had Eleonore (girl, 29.12.1899), Gunvor (girl, 15.03.1902), Johan (boy, 17.12.1904), Tora (girl, 06.05.1907) and Torstein (boy, 22.11.1909). The address in 1910 census for Kongsberg. Johan was living in Oslo in the 1960's.

Anders Narvesen Hotvedt marries Oliane (Oleane) Kristoffersdatter Lobben, and they have 4 children: Nils Andersen Holo (22.10.1894), Kristoffer Andersen Holo (18.08.1896), Einar Andersen Holo(1899-1899), Anna (Andersdatter) Andersen Hotvedt (01.09.1901). Anna was living in Modum, Aarmodt Station, in the 1960's.

From the address books for Kristiania/Oslo it seems like the brothers Nils and Kristoffer Hotvedt moved from Modum to Oslo approx 1916-1917. After some years, in 1926, they both were employed by the same company - Aanonsens Blikvareforetning.

In 1950 Nils Hotvedt and family was living at Monradsgate 17 in downtown Oslo. At least two other males are listed with exact same flat address as Nils, their names being Leif and Arne Hotvedt. Other sources indicates that they were born in 1924 and 1926. One may conclude that they were sons of Nils.

Still from Oslo address book, in 1970 Nils had moved to one of the suburbs of Oslo, living at Hellinga 3. This address corresponds with the findings given in the other thread (Kongsberg) where Nils is stated burried at Nordstrand cemetery.

In case you'd prefer me to contact the Cemeteries and Burials Agency in Oslo - on your behalf - ref the link that Øystein Harkestad gave you in the other thread, I could do that over the weekend. With some luck you may find some living relatives that way

Kjell.....thank you for the information. I did see the post on the Kongsberg forum concerning the graves. You mentioned a son Leif....he is on his parents grave stone so he obviously has passed away.

A big part of my problem tracing these people is the changes in last names. My research showed Nils and Kristoffer taking the last name of Andersen. I didn't realize they went back to the Hotvedt name.

If you want to contact the cemetery people on my behalf that would be fine. I had planned to send an email to them rather than call. I've made several calls to Norway and find it's often hard to communicate because of the language difference. If you aren't able to find out anything I will email them next week.

Another person said there aren't many Hotvedt's in the Oslo phone book so I could also try calling them and see who I find.

I'll get on the phone to Gravferdsetaten in Oslo first thing Monday morning. In addition I'll try contacting a probable descendant of Arne Hotvedt (1926-2009). I will promptly pass on to you any or no news.

I have skimmed thru Aftenposten - a dominating newspaper in Oslo - looking for Hotvedt obituaries or other death notices without any significant findings. Kristoffer Hotvedt died as a widower in Oslo 20 February 1987. His wife was Esther Eugenie (26 September 1894 - 18 Januaruy 1972). Their only daughter (?) was named Marit Laila (7 January 1930 - 26 July 1999). She was married to Knut Bjerke. The wordings of the death notice of Kristoffer Hotvedt in Aftenposten 3 March 1987 - "My dear father" by Marit indicates that she and Knut Bjerke did not have descendants in 1987.

Hopefully someone in the Kongsberg area will turn up with info on descendants of Marthe Narvesdatter. Bjørg Lunde gave you a lead in the other tread that might be worth pursuing.

When I called Oslo Gravferdsetat today, they were most forthcoming in giving me the names and addresses of the persons responsible for tending to the graves of Nils Hotvedt, his wife Bergliot and son Leif at Nordstrand cemetary, Oslo and Kristoffer Hotvedt, his wife Esther Eugenie and daughter Marit Laila with husband Knut Bjerke at Grorud cemetary, Oslo.

I have also found descendants of Eleonore (Ruud) Lillegraven buried at Grua in Oppland County and been able to obtain the name of the caretaker of these graves. She is a granddaughter of Eleonore Lillegraven and daughter of deceased parents Svein and Berit Lillegraven.

Later today I will try to contact these people asking if they allow me to forward to you their names, addresses and phone numbers. I will let you know the outcome of these queries asap, using your mail account.
