Extracting emails from corrupt dbx files in outlook express

g'day to the list

i had a problem with outlook express
due to a corrupt inbox.dbx file, which
i largely fixed by removing the file and
storing it elsewhere and then
allowing o.e. to reinitialise with a new
null inbox.dbx file.

but there are several e-mails in the
corrupt inbox.dbx file which i would
like to retrieve if possible. are there
any freeware tools out there to let
me do this? i have assumed M$
have not provided any support for this.

Sam, you can open this file in Notepad or Wordpad and read it. You can

extract the text and print it, or copy it to your w-p program. There will
be a lot of "chickenscratch" in the file before you get to the actual
message texts, but they're easy to get at. Takes time, though, and a
program that would do this automatically is high on my wishlist.

The standard command 'strings' in UNIX/Linux does exactly that: It
strips out all non-ASCII characters of a binary file and leave you with
the printable characters. The output is sent to the screen, but can be
redirected into a file by writing eg.

strings foo > bar.txt

I'm pretty sure that someone must have made a Win32 executable doing the
same thing. Just google for it.

There are a number of programs that will extract individual messages
from a corrupted OE inbox.dbx. One I have used sucessfully is DBXtract
