Roy James Oien
MARQUETTE - Roy James Oien, 96, life long resident of Skandia, entered eternal life Saturday June 18, 2011 at Marquette General Hospital in the loving care of his family and the caregivers of Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.

Roy was born December 19, 1914 in Gwinn, a son of Gustav and Merit Oien. He was raised in Gwinn and, following the death of his mother, went to live with his great aunt at the Greenwood Location near Ishpeming. He worked on the farm and attended the Greenwood School. In 1931, he moved to Green Bay where he was employed in farm work with the Fairmont and Krautkreamer Farms.

On November 10, 1936, he married the former Bernice VanDerKamp at St. Mary's Catholic Church in East DePere, Wisconsin, and shortly thereafter the couple moved to Marquette to establish their home. Roy was employed at the former Piqua and Cliff Dow before beginning employment with the Athens Mine in Negaunee in 1944. Throughout the years, Roy also did carpentry work. In 1948, Roy worked for Lakeshore, Inc as a welder and fabricator until 1989 when he retired. Always a farmer at heart, he enjoyed gardening and even grew plants in his apartment when he made the move to Snowberry Heights in Marquette. He enjoyed camping at Silver Lake, eating out, tinkering with motors, and helping others.

A member of St. Louis the King Catholic Church, he helped in the building of the first St. Louis the King Church and he and Bernice were devoted parishioners. Roy was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #6447.

Survivors include his daughters, Theresa Guiliani of Iron Mountain and Frances Bignall of Ypsilanti; his grandchildren, Robert, Deborah, Cheryl, Roy, Ronald, Joyce, Brian, and James; 16 great-grandchildren and 8 great great-grandchildren; a sister, Clara McLeod of Radcliff, KY; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Bernice; a daughter and son-in-law, Judith and Robert Mattord; sons-in-law, Robert Guiliani, Bruce Bignall and Earl Yelle; a sister, Mabel Stephens; and brother-in-law, Raymond McLeod and Ted Stephens.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Louis the King Catholic Church on Tuesday, June 21, 2011, beginning at 10:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Tuesday with Rev. Ben Paris, pastor, as celebrant.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to: St. Louis the King Building Fund, 264 Silver Creek Road, Marquette, MI 49855. A reception will follow in Fr. Gauthier Hall. Burial will be made in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
