Peder Loff - passport application and WW draft

Legg inn av gj09303 » 16. mai 2013 kl. 16.15

Hi

Peder Gustavsen Løff was born Sept 29, 1883 in Norway.
I have found him living in Kego, Cass county, Minnesota in the 1920, 1930 and 1940 censuses with his family.
I have also found him in the 1905 census in Itasca. He should have been in the 1910 census, but I have not found him. (He might be a Peter Goff living in Polk in the 1910 census.) He died May 2, 1964.
I have also found two of his voyages 1900 and 1908 from Norway.

But from Ancestry. com I know there is a passport-application for Peter Gustafson Loff and a World War I Draft Registration for Peter G Loff.
I would very much want to see those and am hoping that someone with access to Ancestry.com would be so kind to show them to me. :D

If there is more information than what I have listed about Peder/Peter Loff/Løff in US, I would love to see this also.
(I have all the information from Norway.)

Hei

Takk for alle opplysningene!

Melvin Peter Loff, 87, of Grand Rapids, Minn., formerly of Blackduck, died Monday, May 12, 2008, at Evergreen Terrace in Grand Rapids.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St Andrew's Lutheran Church in Grand Rapids with the Rev. George Gilbertson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Longville, Minn., with full military honors provided by the Veterans if Foreign Wars Post 772 of Longville.

He was born June 29, 1920, to Peter Gustav and Emma (Mathais) Loff in Brainerd. He attended school in a country school in Longville. He then moved to International Falls and worked at the M & O Paper Mill. He married Elizabeth "Betty" Lee Nov. 24, 1941. He was drafted into the U.S. Army Air Force in 1942 and served in World War II. He served in the European Theater, mostly in England, and was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1945. From 1950 to 1993, he farmed in Mizpah, Minn., and had also worked various jobs, including working in the mines in Babbitt, and the paper mill in International Falls. He retired in 1993 and moved to Bemidji. He lived in Blackduck from 2001 to 2006 and in Grand Rapids from 2007 until his death. He was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church of Mizpah for more than 40 years and a past member of the American Legion. He liked to attend auction sales, go to the café, visit with folks, reading the paper, keeping up on current events, and listening to Rush Limbaugh. He enjoyed farming, listening to country music especially Hank Snow, Eddie Arnold and Johnny Cash. In his younger years, he played guitar and sang. He will be remembered by many for his sense of humor. He loved to spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, of Grand Rapids; son, Gary (Denise) Loff of West St. Paul; daughters, Carol Geringer of Claremore, Okla., and Nancy (Bill) Thompson of Hudson, Wis.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and brother, Paul (Della) Loff of Pengilly, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Arnold Loff; and one son-in-law.

The family requests memorials, which they will donate to various charities.

Silver Lake School was built in 1911 in the SE 1/4 of Section 19 and was later moved to Longville.
Silver Lake is south of Whipholt on the Old Grade Road. Emma Mathies Loff recalled that the settlers got
together and took the railroad ties and built a one room school house in 1911. “There were about 17 pupils
who went to our school. I had about three miles to walk in the winter time. When it got dark early, I had to
go through a pine grove. Shortly after I passed it, the wolves would start howling.”
“The new building was ready by the fall of 1914 with Laola Metzer our teacher. She was strict, but
we all loved her.” The weekly Wednesday night prayer meeting and singing school was held in the school
building with Mrs. Lauer playing the old pump organ. William Stamn never failed to request the old hymn,
“Let the Lower Lights be Burning,” while he boomed out the tones in his deep base voice.
Other 8th grade graduates from Silver Lake listed in our research archives were.....

Hi

Lots and lots of information here! :D
Thank you so much!

And there was a school-photo of Emma in the Cass county clipping - nice.

Obituaries have a lot of information. I saw somewhere that there is one for Peter and Arnold, but I have not found them.

Both Melvin and Arnold took part in WWII so I guess there should be a draft for them, but I haven't found them either.

Hi!

Here is the application Arnolds widow wrote for a millitary headstone for him.

There seems to be no obituary for him, thou. I have not been able to find any draft for WW2 either.
