a. unlinking the child from the parents.
b. deleting the extra marriage (that doesn't have any other
children, if there are other children). If it has details that need
adding to the "real" marriage, do that (by hand, probably, unless I
found one could merge marriages - I've never had the need).
c. Once there is only the "real" marriage, give the parents a
child, using the existing individual.

Fix the line length, or in a pinch, use the ENTER key like I did.
Life's too short to spend it scrolling left and right.
If you're using PAF, merge the two sets of parents, man to man, woman to
woman. if it still doesn't work, unlink the kid from the unknown
marriage, and pull up either of the parentswithnames. Then ADD a child
via the edit menu by telling it the kid's in there, go find 'im.

Yes, you simply go to one of the couple and choose the pull down for
Existing Spouse and choose the other one. Each marriage has its own
space for type of marriage, date, place and as many sources or notes as
you will like and another similar space for the type of split if there
was one.
There will be another pull down has a choice to Edit Spouses and if all
the marriages have dates, a simple click will put them in order,
otherwise you just drag them into position.
There is no limit at twice though, some join and split several times
with perhaps another spouse interposed and that is just as easily
handled.
Since the tread was originally about merges, I will say that if you have
a couple who married more than once and some of the marriages are in
separate duplicate couples and you merge them... you may have to follow
the procedure above to recreate the multiple marriages.

Exactly. Reunion will merge two identical data bits into one, but if
they vary, it will duplicate that bit, so that you might end up with two
entries for a birth for example and you then choose the most complete,
accurate or you can leave them both. The main family screen will show
the one you list first. All events can be dragged into any order you
choose, or simply click a button and Reunion will put them in date order
for you. You can still follow that by dragging to a new order if you
like.
What is recommended is that you create a new file for each of those 6,
import into Reunion. You can have Reunion set the General Source for the
imported data to whatever you choose, you may also have Reunion set a
flag for each imported person. Again, you can define your own flag.
Choose one of the 6 to be your master and then import the others in one
at a time. Again, when importing one Reunion file into another, you have
options like above. I would recommend that you unmark your master file
and have all of the import marked. Then just choose match and merge all
marked files against the whole file.
You may end up with a lot of duplicate events, but you will lose nothing.
Actually there is one thing that you might loose. If the same two people
married more than once and you find those marriages separated into
duplicate couples and merge them, only one marriage survives. If they
have marriages with other individuals, those combine properly. So I'd
recommend you do a bit of homework to identify couples who married each
other more than once and get the information in a file or on paper. That
done, it's simple to create the additional marriages after the merger.
Reunion would have no problem with you just importing all the 6 data
files together and then doing a merge of everyone against everyone, it's
just going to take longer and the potential of you choosing two merge
the wrong individuals is increased.
As I said, events, facts, memo, notes etc. that are identical are merged
into one and all their sources shown. If any of those vary other than
having different sources, then they will be duplicated so there is no
chance of lost data.
I would recommend that variant name spelling be indicated in a Source
Detail and your best understanding of the correct name be used in the
First & Mid Name and Last Name fields.

It is trivial to add multiple unions between the same two people which
show the type of union and/or disunion with dates, places and sources.
It is also trivial to move their collective children so that each birth
falls into the union that existed at the time of the birth.
Unions can be sorted into order by a simple click or dragged into the
order of your choice. One of the unions can be chosen as Preferred for
each person and will be the one displayed automatically when you chose
that person.
If you wish, you can have the children appear in other unions as well as
the one they were born into.
I've used the term "union" for Reunion allows unmarried, marriage and
common law. "Disunion" comes in None, Divorce, Separation, and Annulment.
A not uncommon occurrence is a child born to an unwed mother and
carrying her last name. Reunion does not require two parents to enter a
child. You can select Unmarried for the mother and enter her last name
for the child.
Same sex unions are no problem, you simply change the sex of the
individual after creating the union.
