Is there any way of downloading families from the FamilySearch pages in the
1881 census?
I've tried to do it, but all I get is a bunch of isolated individuals, and it
does not show the family relations shown in the Census.

The information in the online 1881 census is of individuals and
households not families. It is possible to envisage many possibilities
which could lead to errors in trying to create families from the
information; e.g. where there are more than two families in the
household who might or might not be related or a where a family is split
across two or more households.
It is up to you to check the accuracy of the information and to make the
appropriate links.

Try the http://www.familyhistoryonline.net website.
You have to register (free) and then you have access to a number of
databases, most oh which you have to pay for. However the LDS-1881
census is free. After finding an individual you are given the choice
to see the others in the same household. Family relations,
occupatios, place of birth etc are given

http://www.familyhistoryonline.net the pay-per view site for the Federation of
FHS. Sign-on is free as is the LDS-1881 census, I recommend using your
email address as your user name.
Once you find your individual it will let you link to the household if
there's more than one in the household. View in table mode and it is
then straightforward to copy and paste into your favourite spreadsheet.
Oh, and you can use wildcards for searching.
There will be a minor update on the site Friday morning (GMT) , adding
170,000 more records including Birmingham marriages, Wiltshire Quarter
Sessions index and Wakefield area Tithe awards. Sorry, but they are not
(quite) free.

I have done this for many families; I find the individual, then the

a new file in my family history application (in my case, Reunion).
I then establish the links - usually by linking first the parents, then
the children, then children's spouses (if any), grandparents, etc. Then
I look to see who is left over, and incorporate them if possible, or
discard them.
Finally I merge the newly created file with my main data - but not until
I've thoroughly checked it!
All the information in the return is held in the source detail field for
*each* person in the GEDCOM.

Re: 1881 British Census index
Hi All
I've replied off list to steve but for the benefit of all the others ......
Once you have downloaded the GEDCOM file from familysearch you need a
programme called LDS Companion which can be found at
http://www.archersoftware.co.uk this will convert your GEDCOM file into various
formats ie xls, dbf, etc ...... as well as doing reports directly.
I use it as a go between to import into Custodian3 NOT a typical Genealogy
package but a programme for storing all your data. Their website can be
found at http://www.custodian3.co.uk/
I have NO connection at all with the two progs mentioned above
regards
Bill
