Family Tree Maker 10 wont open
Every time I try to open Family Tree Maker ver 10 (using XP) I get an error
message saying it has encountered a problem and needs to close. Can anyone
point me to a technical site that gives advice on known incompatabilities
and problems with FTM?

There are no incompatibilities with FTM ver 10 and win XP. Either your
installation has somehow become corrupted, or the file that's set up
to open is. You can check by trying to open with a different data file

Thanks Charlie, I'll try that

Ah, unreasoning abuse.
The fault here is with XP.

Some versions of FTM use a .dll file (one that is part of Windows) that
gets corrupted quite often. I can't remember its name right now, but on
my previous computer I kept it on my hard disc in an easy-to-remember
place, which I've _forgotten_, so that I could copy it into the Win/Sys

I remember when 9 or 10 was new there weas a bug fix on the site
if you have got hold of some old cd
you better get the lates one $29 as about 50c a week for 58 weeks which is
not unreasonable to pay for the annual update
using the FTM find file facility found 27 files so far
enjoy

When you open Family Tree Maker, it opens the last file that you used before
you closed the program.
You should become familiar with the Find File utility, which will scan your
hard drive for Family Tree Maker files. You can then find and open your own
file. You should also write down the name and location of your file (such as
C:\FTW\MyFile.FTW) when you have found it, so that you will know where to
look if you lose track of your file again.
NOTE: Family Tree Maker 11 and 2005 users may notice that they have two
Family Tree Maker windows open at the bottom of their screen. The ability to
have two files open at the same time started with FTM 11. If you have two
files open, make sure that you close your main file last when you close
Family Tree Maker. This way, your main file will open automatically the next
time you open FTM.

From the File menu choose Open Family File.
For FTM 2005: From the File menu, choose Open.
1.. Click the Find file... button.
Family Tree Maker displays the Find file dialog box.

In the dark - there's a details section but its all in numbers and
indecipherable to the uninitiated like me. That dll wasn't something like
'aqueduct' by any chance was it?

I could probably get an answer for you at the website I gave you in their search
form
<http://gen.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/gen.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php?p_sid=4FS3UFdh&p_lva=1680&p_li=&p_page=1&p_prod_lvl1=77&p_prod_lvl2=116&p_cat_lvl1=%7Eany%7E&p_cat_lvl2=%7Eany%7E&p_search_text=&p_new_search=1>
but we don't even know where /when your error is occurring. What steps are
leading up to you error message?
Double-click on a *.ftw file?
Double-click on a desktop icon?
Clicking File from within the loaded program to load a file?
etc?
What is the full text of the error message you're getting?
With that info, we won't be groping in the dark so much.
