Photo Scrapbooks

g'day listers

another basic question for the experts
if i may. i have started to use the photo
scrapbook feature of PAF V5 and it
really does make the research come
alive. but i see various limitations and
would like to see some alternative,
hopefully supplementary methods to
overcome the problems.

(1) filenames for photos over 64
characters in length have to be
truncated when backing up to cd

(2) limited number of characters for
photo caption and no way of sharing
that caption amongst several individuals

(3) limited number of characters for photo
description and no way of sharing that
description amongst several individuals

(4) no means of associating related files
eg (a) jpgs of front and back of photos
(b) the photo itself and details of the
provenance of the photo

(5) no way of sorting photos by date /
place / family

(6) recommendations for a purely scrapbook
programme since a large photo collection of
more immediate family is not appropriate for
inclusion in the PAF Scrapbook itself

all comments appreciated

TIA

The new Irfan Viewer advertises "photo album", but I've not yet tried it.
http://www.irfanview.com/

I used PSPA V5 for a couple of photo albums, the experience was less than
pleasant. But, from what I could find on the Internet last year it was the
best and only one that offered "multiple folders (albums)" that actually
worked. Interestingly enough I found that Adaptec's ECDC V3.2c will copy
a PSPA CD to another. Don't know about other burners, I've lost interest
in then entire game.

Sam, try not to take this wrong, but it sounds to me as if you're
looking for a way to make PAF5 take the place of several different
programs.

(More comments interspersed)

Frankly, I use a sequential number for my pictures, with a printed copy
of a spreadsheet to coordinate sequence # (00001.jpg) and photo-ID
(Granma Jule with Dee, ca 1950, Indian Alley, Winchester)

(2) limited number of characters for

See above. You can also open the .jpg/gif whatever in your photoware,
add the caption in a text box at the bottom of the image, and save some
hassle.

??

(4) no means of associating related files
eg (a) jpgs of front and back of photos
(b) the photo itself and details of the
provenance of the photo

file names like 0001 and 0001v have been working for me, on the rare
occasion the back of my photo has anything USEFUL on it.

(5) no way of sorting photos by date /
place / family

Given that in 90% of my photos, I don't have a sortable date or place,
this hasn't been an issue in my life. (g) I suspect it would be nice to
have had ancestors who wrote things like "1234 Main St, Keyser 27 Dec
1947" on their pictures, but most of my inscriptions are more along the
lines of "Chris' babies" or "Dan's ggrandmother" ...
