Ancestry Response to Census Image Viewing Problems

Re: Ancestry Response to Census Image Viewing Problems
I noticed that current releases of IrfanView, a freeware image viewer,
can read some MrSid files. I haven't tried it extensively, but it worked
on a couple files that I had. Large files (>1 MByte) take a long time to
load, however, and the LizardTech viewer does better there.
If you do any digital imaging work you might be interested in IrfanView
anyway. First of all, it's free. It loads .JPG and many other formats
fairly quickly and can sequence through pictures in a directory with the
spacebar and backspace key. It has rudimentary editing capability (crop,
resize, brightness and contrast, some filtering with free plugins
available).
Another thing IrfanView does is give you access to .JPG comment space.
You can put documentation into a .JPG file and it will be copied with
the file (it doesn't show on the picture). I suspect that most of the
commercial image editing programs can do this also, but did I mention
that IrfanView is free?
IrfanView has the ability to generate contact sheets, which I find
useful when I print a batch of digital pictures. It will put filenames
on the pictures so you can find the ones you like and print them larger.
I have no commercial interest in this program. I just think it's handy.
And the only cost is the time it takes to download.

Mike,
Did you download and install the Plugin? If so, how did/does it perform?
Thanks

Charlie.
I did download and install the Plugin and have encountered no problems with
it at all. You do have to use the Detail Mode to view the ancestry.com
images. The Plugin also allows for the viewing of MrSID images saved to
your disk.

Go to "My Computer" Click on "Local Disc C" Click on "Program Files"
Click on "Lizardtech" Click on "Express View" Should then show you
expressview.dll version 3.4.2.788 which is correct.
