Hello,
Recently, I attempted to send my entire Family tree Maker data
file to someone as a GED attachment in e-mail.
The file contains 9800 names and extensive notes for some
individuals. The file size is over 12 MB.
The message was not delivered. I suspect it was too large. My
transmission took 17 minutes.
Is there another way that I can e-mail this file??? I use
Juno 5.0 and dial up Internet.

Do you have access to webspace? If so, upload (ftp) the zipped file to
the webspace and send the location to your correspondent. Otherwise,
try mailing the zipped file.

Anyway, to test, I just created a compressed folder on my XP Pro box and
put a couple of text files and a bitmap into it. I copied it to a folder
on a Samba share (although the transfer mechanism shouldn't matter). I
copied it from there to a Win2000 box. I used CamUnZip v4.0
(http://camdevelopment.com/) to unzip the file. All the retrieved files
opened just fine in their appropriate applications.

Don,
For less than 10000 names and a 12 MB FTW file, your GEDCOM shouldn't
be too large to mail. Are you sure you actually generated a GEDCOM?
It's fairly easy to mistakenly generate a native FTM file when trying
to export a GEDCOM. If it is truly a GEDCOM, you can open it with a
word processor and simply read it. It should start with lines like:
0 HEAD
1 SOUR FTW
2 VERS 8.0
2 NAME Family Tree Maker for Windows
2 CORP Genealogy.com
.... and so on.
If it is a GEDCOM and is too large for either your mail system, or
your recipient's mail system, try zipping it. This makes the file
smaller by eliminating wasted file space, while retaining all the
data.
Also, since it's really just a plain text file, you can try splitting
it in two parts.... just be sure to tell whoever you're sending it to
how to put them back together in a text editor before trying to import
it.

Re: Exporting FTM
If you are using the free version of Juno, there is an email file attachment
size limit (I think it's 2 meg, but I may be mis-remembering). I don't know
about the paid version of Juno, but I'm sure they also have a file size
limit (although larger). If you're using dial-up, then the 17 minutes you
mention would be about right for 2 megs to upload before the mail server
stopped the upload. If you are trying to send a 12 meg file then you will
need to use a program to compress the file and break it up (span it across
several files) into files under 2 megs, which you will then have to email
seperately. Whoever you're sending them to will need to use the same prgram
to uncompress and re-assemble the multiple files into the orginal single
file.
I know the PKware programs could do this, as could most (if not all) of the
simular types of "zip" programs I've run across.
If that's too much trouble, burn the file to a cd and mail it.
Cheers!
