An apology

Legg inn av Allen » 20. august 2004 kl. 21.33

About six hundred posts ago to a thread about German character entry, I
replied to a post from Cheryl in which she made a side remark about
Windows XP. I made the mistake of posting an off-topic message
amplifying my concerns about XP. This has created an avalanche of more
and more off-topic posts, now embroiled in digital signing. I meant no
confusion--I just replied in the heat of the moment when XP was giving
more than its usual trouble. I won't do it again, and please accept my
apology.

Well, that's certainly reasonable to comment on, no worries there.

No apology is expected or even vaguely necessary. You're not responsible
for anyone else's posts, and topic drift (and intense conversations) happen
a lot in usenet in general, and this group in particular. The resultant
discussion is not a reflection on you or your post, it's just the natural
effect of several headstrong individuals (myself included) who have known
each other for varying values of "a long time". Throw in an emotional
(almost religious) issue of why Windows XP is an abomination (ahem...wups),
and we're pretty much obliged to do the dance.

Allen:

What have you to apologize for? Apart from failure (mine, others') to
change subject lines, that's the way things generally shake out in
newsgroups like this.

The digital signing thread would never have started had not another
poster fussed about the number of additional lines added by my pgp
suite to postings.

Should you apologize? Scarcely. The only transgression I can see is
that you failed to start a new thread, and that's not a mortal sin,
IMNSHO.
