"On the Dalassènoi, see J.-Cl. Cheynet, «Trois familles du duché

discussed p.
75-76, and rejected as unproven: anthroponomy rather points to an
already
Byzantine identity of the immediate ancestors of Damianos.

Does anyone have this book handy, and what does it say about the
ancestors of the eldest Damianos Dalassènos of Delash?

Sincerely Allan.

Cheynet said that the ancestry was unknown, as Pierre suggested. He
approved the conjecture of Nikoghaios Adontz in 'Notes arméno-byzantines
V. Les Dalassènes', _Byzantion_ 10 (1935) tracing the Greek toponym
Dalassa to the convent of Talas in the region of Claudia, some distance
east of Melitene, and discussed his further speculation linking them to
the Claudian family that was prominent at the Armenian court in the 10th
century.

Cheynet considered an immediate Armenian background was unlikely at the
time that Damianos was appointed doux of Antioch. He noted that the
forename Adrianos was unusual then amongst the Byzantine aristocracy,
and pointed to a possible connection with the patrician of this name,
from the theme of the Armeniakon (i.e. the region where an army
returning from Armenia had been posted to defend the empire a few
centuries earlier), whose daughter had married Konstantinos, son of the
emperor Romanos Lekapenos.
