Hello! Every person in the Netherlands called Elderson descends from a saylor Matteijs / Matthijs Elders (later called Elderson) who married 16-11-1784 in Rotterdam with Jacoba Clasina de Lange, baptized Rotterdam 30-12-1764. In the book of marriages is only mentioned that he was born in Norway. He was mentioned as second in command sayling from Rotterdam to the Mediterranian and back in 1784 and 1788. His wife was mentioned "widdow of Matthijs Elderson" on 01-03-1796.
So he was born around 1760. Not much information. Before WW2 my uncle travelled to Oslo to look in archives but was not succesful. The name Elders doesn't sound Norwegian but a dna-test suggests Norwegian descent.
Can someone help me with this puzzle?

Hello
Did the book of marriage mention anything abourt his birthyear or age? That would narrowed the search of him. Or do you have any information that could estimate his birthyear? Book of deceased? Baptism of any children? Netherland cencuses?
Regards
Vigdis

Re: Matteijs Elders, born in Norway, married in Rotterdam 17
I think his name has changes slightly after the emigration to Netherlands. I have tried to search with several name alternative for and I found one that could be a candidate:
A Matis Ellend's son baptized in 1752. The age could be suitable and would be 32 in 1784 when he was married.

But, more information is needed to verify or exclude this candidate.

I can`t find Matis` confirmation in Hafslo churchrecords. Doublechecked the years 1764-1784.
I haven`t checked burials.

Hello
I really do not want to take away Your hopes
for having relatives in Norway. But when i searched for Matteijs Elders in Family Search with no country or timeperiod mentioned, one with the same name emerged. It was in Amsterdam and baptisme of a child called Sara in 1670. .
Afterwards I searched for people called Elders in Europe between 1600- 1780, and there were many. Most people came from Netherland and Preussen.
But of course, one of these could have settled down in Norway and married a norwegian girl. After all, many educated foreigners came to Norway in this period.

Re: Matteijs Elders, born in Norway, married in Rotterdam 17
Thanks everybody for your help!
However, my ancestor himself wrote his name Matteijs Elders (keeping the ships log was part op his job). So Matis Ellends is not very likely.
I will save the information, for you never know.
Best regards,
Evert Elderson.
