John Briggs: "where, precisely, was Alfonso X the 10th
Alfonso of?"

Taf: "Asturias."

I have serious doubts that the Alfonso VIII of the
said counting ever ruled factually over Asturias.
It looks to me like Asturias was, in that division of
territories, a part of the kingdom of Leon. There
Alfonso 'VII' and Alfonso 'IX' were rulers, but
Alfonso 'VIII' was not.

I was not counting Alfonso VIII. I was counting Alfonso Fruelaz, who
the chronology of the Roda Codex says ruled the kingdom between
Alfonso III and Alfonso IV (this reign was overlooked by the
historians who established the numbering, thinking this was an earlier
aborted reign by the future Alfonso IV). Of course, technically
Alfonso I of Aragon was king, jure uxoris, of Urraca's whole kingdom,
so he could be counted too, making Alfonso IX actually the tenth.
