Planckneys of Calais

Some time ago I posted some details of the Planckney family, relations
of Archbishop Christopher Hampton, Primate of Ireland.

Having encountered a tangential reference to them on PROCAT in
relation to Sir William Barantyne, I have done a bit more digging and
can offer this more detailed pedigree.

(1) Henry Planckney, merchant of the Staple of Calais; mayor of
Calais, 1511; will proved PCC 1535.

He married seems to have married twice. One wife was a Miss London,
of Hambleden, Bucks, the sister of Dr John London, c1486-1543, Warden
of New College and Canon of Windsor(see ODNB article), since Strype
calls his son Henry the 'sister's son' of Dr London.

We also know that he was married to Elizabeth, widow of John Bisley:

"Plaintiff: Henry Plankeney and Elizabeth his wife; defendant: Sir
William Baranteyn, John Redde alias Connevey, John Wylmot, and others;
re: abduction of Margaret Bysley, daughter of second plaintiff by a
former husband, and maintenance of the abductors: Oxford" (PRO STAC
2/30/130)

"Letter from Christopher Plankney to [Thomas] Cromwell: re the dispute
between him and William Bysley and John Rede, executors of John
Bysley, and Sir William Barantyne, concerning the carrying away of
Margaret, the testator's daughter and now the petitioner's wife, from
the custody of Elizabeth Plankney his [sic] mother" (Letters & Papers
Domestic & Foreign of the Reign of Henry VIII, PRO, 1886, p 391,
#1146)

As Elizabeth Planckney, widow, she had a licence to marry for a third
time to Adam Copcott [sic, not Coprott] (Archbishop of Canterbury's
London Faculty Office, 23 April 1545) and she was still living when
her daughter Alice made her will in 1577.

What is not clear is whether Miss London and Elizabeth Bisley/Copcott
were the same woman.

Issue:

(1a) Christopher Planckney, issue by his father's first marriage;
married by 1535 his step-sister Margaret Bisley

(2a) Henry Planckney, son of Miss London; named in his sister Alice
Hampton's will, 1577; had a marriage licence dated 27 November 1545 to
marry Katherine Johnson (Archbishop's London Faculty Office)

Elizabeth Bisley/Planckney/Copcott also had a daughter Alice (d c1577)
who married firstly Henry Southwick (d 1551) and secondly John
Hampton, merchant of the Staple of Calais. In her will, Alice calls
Henry Planckney her 'brother'. It is unclear whether her father was
John Bisley or Henry Planckney the elder.

There was a second daughter: Margery, who died suddenly in Calais on 1
April 1545.

From a letter of that date written by Elizabeth Planckney's sister,
the widow Margaret Baynham of Calais, we learn that Elizabeth was then
living in Calais, where she had a shop; she had been widowed twice,
i.e. John Bisley and Henry Planckney [Tudor Family Portrait, B.
Winchester, London, 1955, p 56]

It seems that they were.

The will of Margaret Baynham, widow, was proved PCC 12 January 1558/9
(21 Welles; Prob 11/42A). She names her 'sister Capcute' [ie Copcott]
and the latter's children; her executor and residual beneficiary is
Henry Planckney, her 'cousin'.

It is likely that Henry (who is elsewhere identified as the 'sister's
son' of Dr John London) was the son of Elizabeth Bisley/Planckney/
Copcott, which would identify her maiden name as London.

The wife of Henry Planckney the younger was Katherine Johnson, who was
presumably a relation of the Johnsons of Calais, in whose letters
Margaret Baynham and Henry Southwick (first husband of Elizabeth
Planckney's daughter Alice) feature.
