Dear Newsgroup ~

Recently while I was going through the printed abstracts of the
Episcopal registers of Robert de Stretton, Bishop of Lichfield, I came
across two entries which pertain to William de Sutton, who served as
Rector of Whitwell, Derbyshire from 1341 to 1385 (see
http://www.wlhg.co.uk/book/part5.htm).

According to these entries, William de Sutton had a nephew and niece
named John and Margaret de Holand. I've copied the entries below.

Source: Collections for a History of Staffordshire, n.s. 8 (1905).

pg. 23: sub 1365. "iij Non. Apr. At Heywod. To William de Sutton,
Rector of Whytwell, to choose a confessor for himself, and John de
Holand, his nephew, even in cases reserved; except violation of the
rights of churches, and offences against the Bishop's person or
dignity. Also (to the said Rector) the office of penitentiary for his
parishioners, except in cases reserved, for 3 years." END OF QUOTE.

pg. 55: sub 1371. "xv. Kal. Apr. At same. To William de Sutton,
Rector of Whitewell, to choose a confessor for himself, John de
Holand, his nephew, and Margaret, sister of same John, for 3 years."
END OF QUOTE.

I'm uncertain of the parentage of William de Sutton, but the
chronology would permit him to be a younger son of John de Sutton,
Knt. (died c.1340), of Dudley (in Sedgley), Staffordshire, by his
wife, Margaret (or Margery) de Somery. As for John de Holand and his
sister, Margaret, they could be the children of Robert de Holand,
Knt., 2nd Lord Holand (died 1373), by his wife, Elizabeth. Robert,
2nd Lord Holand definitely had a son named, John de Holand, and it
thought that he possibly had a daughter, Margaret. If so, it's
certainly possible that Elizabeth, wife of Robert de Holand, Knt., 2nd
Lord Holand, was a member of the Sutton family.

This matter deserves further research.

Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah
