Dear Newsgroup ~

The authoritative Complete Peerage, 9 (1936): 708-712 (sub
Northumberland) has a lengthy biography of Sir Henry Percy, K.G. (died
1407), Earl of Northumberland. On page 712, it is stated that his
first wife, Margaret de Neville, died in May 1372. In a footnote on
the same page, it is further stated that Margaret died "on the 11th,
12th or 13th (Ch. Inq. p. m. 46 Edw. III, 1st nos., no. 49)." No
particulars are given regarding Margaret de Neville's place of death
or burial.

However, a record published in a history of North Allerton, Yorkshire
indicates that Margaret lady Percy died in 1372, and was buried in
that parish. The source for this burial record is an old manuscript
in the College of Arms, which was originally owned by John
Wriothesley, Garter, who died in 1504.

Under burials at North Allerton (pp. 245-246), the following entry
occurs:

"Item ecciam d[omi]na Margareta de Percy filia Neville qui [sic] obijt
anno Mo iijc'o lxxijo." [Reference: Ingledew, The Hist. & Antiqs. of
North Allerton (1858): 246].

Dear Doug,

Thanks for that item re: North Allerton.

By the bye, you can add 2 individuals to the list of emigrant
descendants of Henry Percy, Earl of Northumberland and Margaret (de)
Neville: William Asfordby, and William Farrar (or Farrer) of
Virginia. See Plantagenet Ancestry (2004), pp. 414-5.

Cheers,

John
