The problem with Elizabeth Killigrew

Evidently Elizabeth is an all-too-common name in the family of the
Killigrew's. I had noted earlier that that Elizabeth Killigrew, known
to have been born to Sir Henry Killigrew, Knt (cr 1591), MP for Truro
(and others), of Hanworth and Laroch; also Ambassador (died 1603); by
his wife Katherine Cooke "youngest daughter" of Sir Anthony Cooke (by
his wife Anne FitzWilliam)

was married three times.

Elizabeth Killigrew married
1) Sir Jonathan Trelawny (d 1604)
2) Sir Thomas Reynell (on 6 Feb 1606)
3) Sir Nicholas Lower of Clifton (died 17 May 1655)

Elizabeth has a moument at Landulph Church which although *not*
detailing her three marriages, leaves her as the wife of Sir Nicholas
Lower, but specifically stating that she was the daughter of Sir Henry
Killigrew of London by the "youngest of the learned daughters of Sr
Anthony Cooke"

We already know that Sr Henry Killigrew married Katherine Cooke (on 4
Nov 1565 at Gidea Hall), so we are left with a new puzzle.

The old DNB (from the 1920s) has an article on John Berkeley, 1st
Baron Berkeley of Bruton, Somersetshire (cr 1658), who, although they
do not specify his birth or baptismal date, he was buried in the
Parish Church of Twickenham, having died 28 Aug 1678 "aged 72"

This John is there called the "youngest son" of Sir Maurice Berkeley
by his wife Elizabeth Killigrew, "daughter of Henry Killigrew of
Hanworth"

Which we've just shown conflicts with other sources enumerating her
three husbands but not Maurice Berkeley.

Now comes a source to provide an alternate version. While still
needing proof, we can at least place her back in this family, in a new
spot, and retain some idea of how the error originated.

Sir Henry Killigrew had, among others, a brother Sir William Killigrew
of Hanworth. He married Margaret Saunders.

The Vis Cornwall supports this *new* version showing that Elizabeth
(Killigrew) Berkeley was in fact a daughter of William Killigrew and
Margaret Saunders.

Which is very gratifying to me. And represents a correction to Leo's
database as well.

Sorry, Will - not enough websites. We're going to have to ignore it.
