RootsMagic or Legacy for website creation
I have been using Family Tree Maker 9 for a long time. I am ready to
upgrade but don't like the reviews I am reading of the newest version. I
am now also interested in creating a web page of my family tree on my
own site and FTM doesn't have that capability to help you do that. You
can just publish the tree to their site. I am torn between RootsMagic
and Legacy. Which one is better at web page creation?

I am using Family Tree Maker 2006 and is not going to use the newest
version.
Which program that is best at web page creation, is a personal choice.
I tested practically all available programs, before I settled with
GreatFamily, which I liked best.
Url: http://www.greatprogs.com/
I´m loading the Gedcom from FTM and then generates the web pages. I´m
not using GreatFamily for anything else.
You can take a look at my home page http://www.kurres.se , klick on
"Släktstartsida" and browse.
I did the testing a couple of years ago, and doesn´t know the current
look of the pages generated by RootsMagic and Legacy.

Thanks for the reply. I'll take a look at that. I am mainly looking for
a program to help me generate a web page.

At the risk of seeming a one trick pony, let me recommend
that you look at phpGedView or The Next Generation - both
easily found by googling for them. First, though, read
Dick Eastman's reviews, which can be found in the Eastman
On-line Genealogy Newsletter archives.
Neither program creates web pages in the sense that, say, Legacy
does: a mass of linked *.htm files. Instead, each presents a
view of your data created dynamically from your gedcom - on the
fly, so to speak. As a result, no *.htm files are created, none
have to be uploaded to your webserver and updates to the site
are immediate - you change your data, it's immediately visible
to anybody accessing the site. There are hosting sites for
both in case you don't want the hassle of maintaining a site
and doing such nitty-gritty things as backups, or you can
(almost) as easily run your own site using them. Both have
the added advantage that you can allow trusted others to edit
and update your information - degree of access under your complete
control. I can't speak for TNG, but do know that there's a
Windows package for pGV available for download that contains
all the elements necessary for a test drive.
It may well be that neither pGV nor TNG is what you want and
that the static pages created by most genealogy applications
will satisfy your requirements. Still, I think you owe it to
yourself to give one or the other - or both - a look.

I personally favor Legacy working with The Next Generation of Genealogy

Though PhpGedView is free, in my opinion, TNG is worth every penny.
I've used TNG for a few years to handle my genealogy site and have been
pretty please. I tried PhpGedView and it just wasn't for me, though
some folks might like it.

Then let me cheerfully point you in the direction of TNG, or "The Next

understand, the creator of the software takes personal interest in
making sure you get your site up and running, and it's very, very
affordable.
http://lythgoes.net/genealogy/software.php
I visited many of the sites of satisfied users, wandered the site for
hours reading about the software and playing on the demo pages before
purchasing my copy. I should have just grabbed it right away as it
took more hours to research it than it took to install and get the
program up and running. It rocks.
And the hosting company he suggests, http://www.simplyhosting.net is
excellent AND affordable.
