Hei!
Hun var søster til min tippoldemor Dortea (ektefødt datter av Hans Hansson og Guri Jonsd). Og het Berta Knutsd. Ble født 1819 i Lærdal og døde 1904 i Iowa. Opplysninger i følge bygdeboka for Lærdal. De andre (halv)søsknene hennes ble igjen i Lærdal (Hauge sokn). Ifølge FS er hun døpt 3/10-1819 som uekte datter av Knudt Siursen og Guri Johnsdr.
Jeg har spurt en som har vært med i arbeidet med bygdeboka om hvor opplysningen om dødsåret og dødsstedet er funnet. Men uten resultat.
Avreisen fra Norge har jeg ikke funnet. Kanskje hun var en av de første nordmenn som reiste ut. Kunne vært gøy å finne ut når hun reiste ut.
Er det noen som kan hjelpe meg med opplysninger om Berta/Birtes skjebne? Fikk hun egen familie? Hvor bodde hun i IowA? Og finne folketelling 1900 hvor hun er nevnt? Og evt. andre relevante opplysninger.

s. 265 står det at Ola Andersson (sønn av Anders Mikkelson Mikkelsen, Amla. Anders Mikkelsen var min tippoldefar.) f. 1856 hadde adresse: Bergen Street, Brooklyn, New Yorrk. Hvor har du/forfatterne fått opplysningen om adressen fra? Og fikk han familie?
s. 261 står det at Berta Knutsd. (1819-1904) døde i USA, Iowa. Datter av Guro Jonsd. (Grøtte) Hvor fant forfatterne opplysningen om dødsfall i Iowa, USA?Er det mulig å få svar på når hun emigrerte? Og om hun fikk familie? Og om hun brukte Knutsdatter da hun døde?.

Pastor retires from All Saints Lutheran in Darwin

After nearly five decades of ministry the Rev. Thor Skeie of All Saints Lutheran Church of Darwin is retiring June 30.
Skeie came to All Saints church on All Saints Day in November, 1996.
“I’ve seen God at work in the lives of people,” Skeie said, and added “I’ve tried, Lord,”
He had been pastor of Faith Lutheran Church of Hutchinson for 28 years before he came to All Saints, he said.
Skeie, who still lives in Hutchinson, also served at Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia for seven years. His first parish was three congregations in the Benson area.
Although most of Skeie’s ministry was in small towns or rural areas, Skeie came from Brooklyn, New York, he said. His parents came from Norway and settled there. To keep his Norwegian heritage, Skeie decided to go to St. Olaf College, a predominantly Norwegian Lutheran school. That’s how Skeie came to love Minnesota and its small towns and rural areas, he said.
Skeie graduated from Luther Theological Seminary in St. Paul in 1957. He remembers well getting that first call to serve the Benson area. “I love the rural very much,” Skeie said. “I felt good about going.”
Because he felt good about each of his calls, he feels this is how God communicated to him to accept those calls, he said.
Skeie enjoyed the honesty, openness and genuineness of the people of Darwin, he said.
The members of the congregation at All Saints are concerned not only for their fellow Lutherans, but for others too, he said.
Skeie thinks of the ministry as plowing earth and planting seeds, he said.
“The Lord is the one who brings about the increase,” Skeie added.
Skeie also was director of the National Bible Camp Association for eight years. He has been all over the country visiting various Bible camps, adding that this work was an extension of his parish ministry.
The highlight of his ministry was “seeing young people grow up and take their place in society and serve God,” Skeie said.
Skeie and his wife, Audrey, have three children of their own. Their son, Peter, is in Nashville. Eric Skeie is in Olivia. Their daughter, Kirsten, is in Bismarck, N.D.
The biggest challenge in being a pastor is making the Gospel relevant in the lives of people throughout their entire lives, he said.
“So much is competing for people’s time,” Skeie said.
The basics of Christianity, such as the Gospel, community and awakening people to the need of Christ, are becoming secondary instead of primary. Skeie is concerned about that, he said.
“People don’t take sin seriously anymore,” he said. “By nature we are sinful, but God has made provision for us.”
Sometimes Skeie wishes he would have gone back to school to get an advanced degree in theology, he said.
All Saints will have an intern pastor, Vicki Toutges of Litchfield. She is a third-year student from Luther Seminary. Skeie is an intern supervisor so he will be coming back to All Saints occasionally in his role as supervisor.
Otherwise he will join his wife, a former teacher, in volunteering. Skeie likes to travel, read, and do crossword puzzles. He also likes sports and telling Ole and Lena jokes, so he will stay busy in his retirement, Skeie said.

Kanskje det er denne Thor som jeg tenkte på. Men det ser ut som han dessverre ikke er i slekt med meg, min onkel og de andre i slekten. De Scheie`ne vi (jeg) vet om dro til California (de er nevnt i annet tema i dette forumet-sommeren 2005, tror jeg).
Eureka, Humboldt. Og noen andre Scheie-slektninger (lenger bak enn de i California) dro til Chicago-området. Men vet ikke om de hadde/har Scheie-navnet ennå. Tilslutt kan jeg si at jeg vet om ei jente født Scheie som havnet i North Dakota. Datter av bror til min tippoldefar. Mer vet jeg ikke.
Likevel var det fint å vite mer om denne Thor, f.eks. alder. Er han den eneste pastor/prest med navnet Thor Scheie/Skeie i Minnesota el. som har vært prest/pastor med det navnet? Yes the date may be wrong, especially if the tombstones were the only source of dates. I have found many dates to be wrong in Cemeteries. I checked the 1910 census for all of Iowa and I did not find her either.

On to Bertha Kalstad: It looks like you found the same woman as Margit and I found in Iowa and your link shows she probaly is another one. If your info from the Bygdebook is right her patronymic also should be an "K", not an "O".
To be sure I also have checked 1865 - and '75 Census for Land; Oppland CO, and it looks she was born inS. Aurdal; Oppland CO. Wrong woman.

If I have/get time tomorrow, I will try to take a trip to Riksarkivet according infos about "my" Bertha/Birte.
I suppose that the one Bertha (died in 1914) you both two have found is result after to have traced towards all counties in Iowa?
Can it happen that this Bertha (Kalstad) stayed in another state, so she was not in censuses in Iowa 1910, too?

It will be easier to compare infos, for example compare with censuses 1880 we here in Norway can see (free). Or another compares.
Is it possible to get obituary or similarly of Bertha Kalstad death 1914 (1913)?
She ("my" Birte/Bertha) is not born 3th october, but baptismed(no: døpt) 3th october 1819 (noticed in Familysearch) according to entry no. 1. I will try to find her birthdate tomorrow.

It will be easier to compare infos, for example compare with censuses 1880 we here in Norway can see (free). Or another compares.
Is it possible to get obituary or similarly of Bertha Kalstad death 1914 (1913)?
She ("my" Birte/Bertha) is not born 3th october, but baptismed(no: døpt) 3th october 1819 (noticed in Familysearch) according to entry no. 1. I will try to find her birthdate tomorrow.

she was born in Lærdal, Sogn & Fjordane. So I think she lived there before she emigrated/moved. I will check the chuchbooks for Lærdal and see if she were witness by the baptisms for some children she was aunt of. That can be amongst some traces. I suppose she emigrated from Bergen with boat. It have been difficult to find her emigration. But I know that we can`t find all emigrants on the lists.
One source is the bygdebook/farmbook. Another source is Familysearch. I do not manage to make bookmark/link to her baptism. Her parents name you can see in entry no. 1 and entry 9th november 15:04:29.

Today I was on Riksarkivet some hours.
And found Birtes baptism. Took time because of how this churchbook was builtup.
Her birthdate: 22th september 1819. And baptism date same as in FS: 3th october 1819.
Her parents were not married when she was born/baptismed. So the info that her parents were married was wrong (Familysearch?)
I did not find Birte as witness when her nephews and nieces (the first happened in 1856 Ole Andersen/Michelsen) were baptismed. Only her (half)sisters were witnesses.
I did not find Birtes confirmation. So all infos I have found today can be sign that she maybe left Lærdal before 1856. And that she maybe moved out of Lærdal together with her father. These infos according Birte and her father have to be confirmed, maybe.

Neil Hofland - also has completed a genealogical database for Lærdal as well. I loaded the 4 volumes of the Lærdal bygdebok that are complete into a PAF database. The fifth and final volume will be out in a couple years or so, and I will add that as well. I am also collecting descendants of the emigrants and entering them. There are now 23,015 individuals and it is growing.
