I am researching two Norwegian surnames which both end in 'vaag.' Can
anyone tell me if this suffix stands for a geographical entity, etc?

Hi Donald!
The term 'vaag' (modern våg) means a bay.

Thanks, Olaf! I had suspected that 'vaag' stemed from the name for a
geographical entity, as second of of the two names in which I am interested
(Nesvaag and Gjovaag) is also the name of a small island near Bergen from
which this family originated.

If you search for the questioned farmnames In i.e the cencus of 1900 http://www.rhd.uit.no/folketellinger/fo ... ger_e.aspx you will find several persons at at the farm Nesvaag. When searching for Gjovaag you must use the norwegian spelling Gjøvaag you will also find several persons there.

Nesvaag is a farm in Province Rogaland and Municipality Sokndal

Gjøvaag is a farm in Province Hordaland and Municipality Tysnes
