Looking for help with .gen files

I read some old posts about this file type and spent a couple hours
tracking down false leads.

My father created a family tree in a DOS-based program called Family
Tree Print, by Cherry Tree Software. Apparently, this program had some
connection to Family Ties software.

The program placed the family data into files with these extensions.
The one ending in .gen seems to have most of the data (I can view it
with a text viewer).

..dat
..gen
..nam
..ref

I found a gen to gedcom utility but it didn't work on these files.

Can anyone help me with this one? I'd hate to lose all of the work
that went into the old program.
