Carl Johan Knudsen f. 11/4/1852

Hi all,

I went to Houston County Minnesota last week to do some research. I found the confirmation record of my great grandfather and it stated the following for his confirmation on October 7, 1866.

Carl Johan Knudsen born April 11, 1852 in Valdres
Parents listed as:
Ingebor Gulbrandsdatter
Knud Rye (listed as dead in the record)

I am suspecting they came from Svenes, does anyone have any Bygdeboks for that area of Norway? Or would anyone know anything about the Rye Gård in the Valdres area? Are there Church records for that area?

Hi all,
I have found more information about those I search about in Norway:

My gg grandmother was Ingebor Gulbrandsd born ca 1820-1822 (Mother to Carl Johan Knutsen). She came to America ca 1855-1857 and lived in Houston County, Minnesota her whole life. Her brother Gulbrand born ca 1829 also lived in Houston County for awhile. I have a cousin who has been going to Salt Lake City and researching for me. She wrote me the following: (She thinks they are Ingebor's and Gulbrand's parents)

"His name was Gulbrand Gulbrandsen Ridste, when he moved in. (Into Vardal from Nord Aurdal) When he married Johanne Pedersdatter it lists them as both living on the Braastad farm and both of them being 27 years old." (She thinks they were both born ca 1892)

So you see, that is all I have to go on. On all documents pertaining to her and my g grandfather it only says they came from Valdres.

Gulbrand Gulbrandsen Ridste was supposedly born in Nord Aurdal, went to Vardal and that is where Gulbrand, Ingebor and a brother Peder were born. Gulbrand Jr. went to Svennes and married, that is how we got the father's name and information about Vardal. In the Svennes Churchbook it says he came in from Vardal.

A friend thinks that perhaps this is my Gulbrand Gulbrandsen f.1792 in the 1801 census with his brother and parents.

I have now found more information and would be interested in any ideas of where to look for the family leaving Norway. Carl Johan was born in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway of parents born in Nord Aurdal. I found Carl Johan leaving Bergen for Nord Aurdal, but where was his Mother?

With a lot of luck and the newest database online I finally found Carl
Johan Knudsen's baptismal record. It lists his parents just as I said
it did earlier on his confirmation record here in Minnesota.
