Inga Lovise Danielsen or Jøssang died in North Dakota
Hello
My great grand parents lived in Northa Dakota between 1902 and 1909. I found them in the new published Norwegian census 1910 confirming that they had returned to Norway in 1909:
http://da.digitalarkivet.no/ft/person/pf01036637002565/
I have also found their return to Norway via Liverpool:
UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960
Name: Torsten Danielson
Birth Date: abt 1881
Age: 28
Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States
Arrival Date: 23 Nov 1909
Port of Arrival: Liverpool, England and Queenstown, Ireland
Ship Name: Lusitania
Search Ship Database: View the 'Lusitania' in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Shipping line: Cunard Line
Official Number: 124082
We know that they got a girl called Inga Lovise that died in America. I have tried to find her death / thombstone in North Dakota, with no succeed.
It would also be nice to find their son Karl's birth in North Dakota in 1908. The birth date written on his thombstone in Norway is 3th Sep 1908, but the census 1910 says 2nd Sep 1898 (the year must be wrong, must be 1908). In Norway his full name was Karl Daniel Jøssang. Torsten and Gina used the surname Jøssang when they arrived in 1902.
Can anybody help me?
Vigdis

Where in North Dakota did they live and when did they come to North Dakota? Are they in any census records?

I do not know where in ND they lived, because the census 1910 do not say anything about that. And since they came after 1900 and leaved before 1910, I do not expect to find them in any american censuses. Unless there is a 1905 census in ND?

Hei
I hope this link is working?
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/20080797 ... /898605722
All about my great grandfather is published there, with source citations.
The arrival information:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Thorstein D Jóssing
Name: Thorstein D Jóssing
Arrival Date: 20 Apr 1902
Birth Year: abt 1881
Age: 21
Gender: Male
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Norwegian
Port of Departure: Southampton, England
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Ship Name: St Paul
His final destination was at his brother-in-law Aslag Nodvig in Webster. But in one column (11) says S. Dakota, but the other column (16) says N Dak.
Aslag's sister is on the same list as well.
Could it be Webster, Day, South Dakota, USA? Aslag Notvig arrived 12 May 1901, and his final destination was also Webster, S. Dakota. He and a friend Bjørn Jøssang was travelling together and they were supposed to visit Bjørn's sister, and Aslag's cousin in Webster. Bjørn lives in 1910 in Racine, Day, South Dakota. So may be we should start in Day County, South Dakota?
His wife, my great grandmother Gina Larsdatter Jøssang is here:
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/20080797 ... /893877579
She arrived 12 May 1902, about one month later after Torstein, (line no 26 in the passenger list), her final destination was not so easy to figure out on the passenger list. One place I think I read Cioux City (but I am not quite sure), and another place it seems to be Moville, Woodbury, Iowa. So I am a little bit confused where they actually settled.
The Norwegian Census says they lived in North Dakota, and their son Karl was born in North Dakota.

Re: Inga Lovise Danielsen or Jøssang died in North Dakota
No bibles to check information in ? If they were in South Dakota, their births should be online and they had a 1905 census. However with both you sometimes have to be creative in spellings or partial spellings. Seems like in the time period of 1890-1910 a lot of the Norwegians who immigrated into America were very creative in surnames they used. Iowa has some census records online also, along with births and marriages. I will think about how to tackle this and come back this evening. Now I have two two-year olds and a five-year old to spend time with.

What does it say on Karl's confirmation record? What does it say on his marriage record? What does it say when they moved back into the parish?

Hei
Unfortunately, they were not registrated in any moving record, either in Strand where they lived from 1909 to 1911, og in Tysvær where they settled in 1911 (100 years ago next year!). The confirmation records available on net stop at 1918, and Karl's confirmation should be abourt 1922-1923. Karl was never married.
But I suddently now remember that there is a story about this family in a book that was written about the people who went to America. I should try to find this book on the library and look for any important information there.

Re: Inga Lovise Danielsen or Jøssang died in North Dakota
Hi
I will try once more to ask for help to find my great grand aunt's and uncle's births in North Dakota. I have now checked in the book I mentioned in my last posting. Unfortunately, it does not say anything about which city or county they lived in, it only confirms that they lived in Northa Dakota, and that the children were born in N. Dakota and Inga Lovise is buried there as well.
But I have found Karl's birth date (03.09.1908):
http://www.disnorge.no/gravminner/bilde.php?id=1757936
Inga was born in 1906.
Gina Pedersdatter Toen / Jøssang and Torstein Danielsen Jøssang were married in 1905 according to the information in the book.
Any idea of how to find them?
In the book, there is also an information that Torstein's brother Kristen was living at their home and travelled daily to the neightbour city to work. He was probably working with building of railway tracks.

Inga Lovise Torsteinsdatter Jøssang b. 1906 (she died before 1909, never married)
Karl Daniel Torsteinsen Jøssang b. 03.09.1908

Re: Inga Lovise Danielsen or Jøssang died in North Dakota
I think you will need to find someone who lives in McLean County of North Dakota near Douglas Township to check out the Churches and the Burials. At that time, I will warn you that many babies were just buried in the yard where they lived or at the edge of a woods on their property with no markers. Ask on the local message board for McLean County.

Hei Vigdis!
I just wanted to add I found a town Webster, in Ramsey county, ND...
So maybe that is where Aslak went at first??
My father was born in Mercer, ND in McLean county...I went there recently to see what it is like(I had never been there)...This part of North Dakota is unique that is for sure...
I think the railroad was being built through Mercer about 1905....
The township of Douglas is northwest of Mercer...
Lykke til with your search!

Re: Inga Lovise Danielsen or Jøssang died in North Dakota
Hi Patty, thanks for your interest for my case.
Yes, Anna is Aslak's sister. She actually arrived on the same ship as my great grandfather Tortstein.
I have got an answer on the ancestry message board, that says:
I have perhaps found a couple of clues for you though. Using Google I came up with two of the Mormon International Genealogy Index listings that show both the marriage of Torstein Jossang and Gina Petersen on 11 Nov 1906 and the birth of their daughter Inga Lovisa Jossang on 26 Sept 1907. Interestingly the information doesn't come up when I use the familysearch.org website.
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... esults.a...
Since this information is submitted by either a relative or a random researcher you need to check it more thoughly but I have found often the dates are correct.
The marriage record only lists North Dakota but the birth record says Douglas, Ward County North Dakota. I found some historical information on the North Dakota Genweb site which says that when the railroad came through in early 1906 the town of Douglas was moved several miles north and went from being in Mclean County to Ward County.
Douglas Township still existed in Mclean County and that's where the Notvik(Nodvik) family was in 1910 and could easily be where the Jossang family was. Consider that you may need to look in both counties for official records.
There is a lot of information on the ND Genweb sites for each county. I have looked through some and not found anything but it's worth looking.
I hope the information about the marriage and birth / death of Inger Lovise are correct, but I should preferably have the "proof". And Karl Daniel's birth is also still wanted.

Gerda F. Helland
5/22/1932 to 3/25/2008
Gerda Finnesand Helland passed away at home Tuesday, March 25, 2008 from complications of Alzheimer's disease. Her sweetheart Fritz who had lovingly taken care of her was at her side. Gerda was born May 22, 1932 in Stavanger, Norway. She married Frithjof Bjarne Helland on October 16th, 1953. They joined the LDS church and decided to move to the United States in May of 1959. They brought three children with them and completed their family with a fourth child born here in Utah. They lived in Utah until 1964 and then moved to Seattle for 5 years. They moved back to Utah In 1969 and have lived in their East Millcreek home for the past 39 years.
Gerda was the ultimate homemaker and loved taking care of her family and home. She was an excellent cook and spoiled her family with many wonderful meals. She worked hard at whatever she did and was always willing to help her friends and family with whatever they needed. She welcomed her children's spouses and the 21 grandchildren that came with their unions.
She had a strong testimony of the gospel which guided her actions throughout her life. She held many church callings and blessed the lives of those she worked with. In 1992 she went on a mission to Norway with her sweetheart and fulfilled a lifelong dream.
She was preceded in death by her parents,
Ivar Finnesand and Gudrun Jossang Finnesand and
two siblings, Torbjorn and Aslaug.
She is survived by her husband, Fritz,
four children, Gunn Challis (Brian), Mai McAllister (Doug), Jacob (Janet), Frank (Sandy),
21 grandchildren, 11 and 1/2 great-grandchildren,
and three brothers, Tor, Inge, and Gisle.
The family wishes to thank Sunbrook Hospice for their wonderful service and compassion this past month.
Funeral services will be held Saturday March 29th, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. in the East Millcreek North 16th ward, 3408 Celeste Way (3370 S. 3120 E). Re: Inga Lovise Danielsen or Jøssang died in North Dakota
Thanks a lot, Margit.
It is correct that Gerda Finnesand Helland was a grandchild of my great grandparents. The orbituary was very useful. I am actually writing av family book of Gina and Torstein and their descendants. Next saturaday, the 18th, there will be a family reunion. It is 130 years since their birthdays and it is 100 years since they settled on the farm in Slåttevik, Tysvær, Rogaland.
The other information is partly correct. Torstein, Karl and Inga Lovise born in 1910 were not born in Slåttevik as written. Torstein and Inga Lovise were born in Jøssang, Strand, Rogaland, and Karl was actually born in North Dakota, may be in Douglas.
Based on that, it is always important to check the original sources.
