Disk Defragmenter update
I am always amazed at the knowledge and experience that is available on the
genealogical newsgroups and that is so readily shared. Thanks to everyone
who replied to my query about a problem that has been troubling me for
months.
The first remedy that I tried was that suggested by Steve Dawson to restart
in safe mode. I did that, and it worked!! So I had no need to try any of the
other remedies.
Thanks again to all for your replies and suggestions.

Ah, that seems easier than the "kill everything I can with process

that, and thanks Steve!

Motion seconded, but what I'd find equally/more interesting is whether or not he's now
been able to run Defrag successfully the previous way without going into Safe Mode. If so,
then that defragging somehow fixed the problem.
If not, then the problem is still there. It could be internal to defrag or it could be a
problem that is draining resources in an unnoticed way and effecting applications etc.

Check the properties, by going to MyComputer, and right clicking on C
drive... Properties, then check the bottom to see if indexing is selected.
If it is, unselect it, and you 'should' be able to complete the defrag.

The OP did indicate that he was running Win98.
The OP has already successful run Defrag by using Safe Mode!.
I can't believe I'm reading this. Omigawd!<ROFLMAO>
Yeah. Read the thread first (smarder) so you know what & who you're responding to and as to
whether you're beating a dead horse.(sort of like rtfm)
You're well-intentioned I suppose, but I'm not the OP with the problem. I was only asking a
follow-up question.

Re: Disk Defragmenter update
And then do it a second time, in full Windows mode if possible. It's
worth doing...
