Having returned to genealogy after a few years away I've generally
been quite happy just plodding away using a reliable old work horse
in the form of Family Tree Maker v3.40...!
Does anyone have any summaries of what I will gain (lose?) by upgrading
to a later (latest?) version of said package, or indeed to A.N.Other
alternate product that is marginally more up-to-date than my present.
For info, I'm UK based with no known non-UK relatives
(i.e. CDs with huge quantities of American data won't turn me on...!)

Hello Andrew,
Make sure you only buy the FTM without those CDs.
It is sold in the UK at http://www.twrcomputing.co.uk

If you're "set" on continuing to use FTM, then an upgrade to a more
recent version should improve things, as version 3.4 is really quite
out of date. However, I'd recommend you check out a few other programs
before upgrading.... all offer significant improvements over even the
latest version of FTM.
Legacy... I don't use it but many people love it. They even have a
free version, so it's really cheap to try out.
TMG... Generally considered the most "full featured" program
available. You won't outgrow TMG, but it may take you a while before
you feel comfortable using it.
Rootsmagic... my favorite. Lots of features and quick response to
questions in the user group (mail list). Very "fast" program.
PAF.... long-time favorite and still very many users.
