1830 Census Lookup Request

Legg inn av Pam » 28 okt 2004 23:55:33

A search of Ancestry's 1830 census index shows both a Jesse Oslin and a
William S. Oslin as living in Newton Co., GA. I have gone through the
Newton County records through Heritage Quest but have not found either
Oslin. Could someone with an Ancestry subscription check for details there
and see if there is a page number, township or any other identifying
information which might help me to find the correct page. A couple of pages
were very light so perhaps I missed them but I'm wondering if they were in
fact in a different county. Thanks.

Looks like ancestry has an indexing problem, as both images are not linked. The
system automatically sent an email to the sysman, so, maybe someday the images
will get linked.

On this webpage http://www.skcensus.com/census/ga/index ... n1830.html
is supposedly the index of all of Newton Co., GA for the 1830 census and it
does not show any OSLIN families. Of course the trascribers may have misread
it.

What shows up under Ancestry's index is an 1838 census for Jesse Oslin
and William S. Oslin, and not a 1830 one. As already mentioned in
another reply, the link to the 1838 page is not working. However, I
checked the 1840 census for Georgia, and there is a Jesse Oslin in
Newton County, GA for that year.

Thank you all for checking on that for me. Obviously 1838 is not a census
year so I wonder if somehow they had tax lists with it. Too bad there was
no image. I was trying to fill in census records for those people and have
every one except the 1830. I guess it'll still be a blank. At least I can
assume I didn't miss it when going through the 1830 Newton Co. page by page.
Thanks again.

You're welcome. When I first looked at the 1830 index and saw 1838, I
thought it was a typo on Ancestry's part. Then I went back and did a
search on the surname alone, and there were Oslins in Georgia who were
shown as having 1830 and 1838 listings, but there's nothing on the page
to explain what the 1838 date. Hopefully, if and when ancestry ever
links to those names, it'll show what kind of a record it is.
