There used to be a web site that enabled me to extract the piece and
approximate folio numbers from 1901 census personID data acquired BEFORE
the introduction of encryption in 2003.
I still have quite a number of these, undecoded, and I'd like to extract
the data. I do NOT have the pageID data that was useful for a while
before that, too, was encrypted.
It's no use offering me PC software, as I have an Apple Macintosh and
can't run it. It has to be a web based decoder.
Does such a site still exist? Can anyone offer a URL for one?

I now use 1901 England and Wales Census Decoder
http://www.censusdecoder.com/
[and no longer 1901 Census Extractor_Guess Timator from
http://www.LeedsIndexers.co.uk]
Anyway the blurb at http://www.censusdecoder.com/howtouseinmac.htm states ..
Running on a Mac? (Wriiten By Frank Mitchell)
The 1901 Census Decoder is not designed to work directly on a Macintosh, but it can still be used if
you have a PC Windows Emulator installed.
My emulator is Virtual PC version 5 with Windows 95, but it should work just as well on other
emulators or other versions of VPC. It's probably not relevant, but for the record my computer is a
'mirrored doors' Dual PPC using Mac OS X 10.2.5.
When the Decoder is opened, it automatically tries to log directly on to the PRO (National Archives)
1901 census site using Internet Explorer. So it is necessary to configure your emulator to enable it
to log on to your ISP. Other versions of VPC may be slightly different, but, to set this up with
version 5, click on the Settings button in the panel which appears when VPC is opened. This opens a
window with a list of items available for setting up the program. In this list select 'Networking'
near the bottom of the window, then check the box to 'Enable networking' and select the button
'Shared Networking using Sockets'.
That's it! Your PC should now share your existing Mac TCP/IP address and you can alternate between
the Mac and the PC without resetting any network information.
My VPC originally came with Internet Explorer 4 for Windows. I'm not sure if the Decoder requires
it, but I also used VPC to download Internet Explorer 5.01 (Service Pack 2) from Microsoft's web
site. It also makes sense to download the Decoder and its update directly into the emulator.
In my case the Decoder at first still refused to work, but, with John's help, the problem turned out
to be a missing PC file called MSVBVM50.DLL (Note this is a Microsoft Visual Basic 5 runtime file
which is available from http://runtimefiles.com if need be).
Don't ask me - it's all gibberish

I've seen that, but I've no intention of spending over $100 on a PC
emulator that I won't be using for anything else (except, perhaps, to
attract Windows viruses).
The Leeds Indexers site also only offers a downloadable application. I
need a web-based calculator - presumably they've all been withdrawn.
I already have Macintosh software that decodes and sorts the current
encrypted pageID data (as long as it is all acquired in one session) -
indeed, I wrote it myself. (It's OS9 and earlier/Classic only, but then
I still use a lot of Classic software.) If you want to try it, go to

Thanks to you and Data Junkie for the suggestions, though.
