finding original birth certificate

Legg inn av Kristen L. Renneker » 14 sep 2004 04:02:17

My husband's father (Stanley) was born in Butler county, Ohio. Stanley's
father left, and his mom remarried. His step-father adopted him and his
brother and they took his last name. My problem is that the birth
certificates were changed. Does anyone know if the original certificates
would be kept on file where I could find more info on his biological father?
I know his name, but absolutely nothing else.

thanks for any insight,

Kristen :)

I don't know as I don't live in Ohio or the U.S. but it might be a place to
start. Just did a web search for Ohio birth records.

Thanks, I just sent an email. I really hope I can get a copy of the birth
cert with info about his biological father...didn't want to send in the form
and $15 without even knowing if they keep the originals.

Usually in a formal (court approved) adoption, the original birth
certificate is sealed and replaced by one with the adoptive father's
name. The latter is then what is on file with the vital stats people
and that is possibly what you will end up getting. I know that in
Washington state adoption files are sealed; there is a (complicated)
process to request that a file be unsealed (sometimes granted,
sometimes not) but it usually involves the parent or child involved,
not third parties.

ok, thanks, so I shouldn't get my hopes up.

It would be nice if there is a way to get the original information, everyone
involved is dead.

My story is just about the same. My father died, Mom remarrried, and the
my father adopted me. In my case, my birth certificate was changed and my
birth father is not mentioned at all. However, adoption is a legal
process and papers are filed through the courts. If your fathers was
still living at the time of the adoption, he had to be given notice if
possible, before his parental rights are terminated.I was able to find my
court records and they do have my birth fathers name attached, I was also
able to find the attorney that represented my parents. My case wass
easier than yours sounds because my father was deceased. Anyway, just a
thought, hope it helps
