REQ: Photo ID, Minneapolis, c 1920, Police Dept

My grandfather recently passed and left a photo (framed) of his father
when he was with the Minneapolis City Police Department.

All I know is that he's one of the men (not a captain). He served
between at least 1916 and 1930, retiring sometime before 1942.

Any help about where the photo might have been taken, what the
different uniform hats mean, how I can identify which man is my
ggfather would be appreciated. It appears that a number is on the
caps. Would that be his badge number? If so, how can I figure out what
badge number he had?

The photo and my email are posted at:

TIA!

That picture strikes a resembalance to the rear of the Mpls City Hall ...
judging by the stone work ..

The uniforms as far as I can tell fall into 3 classifications (which I am
sure you already figured out) Officers, Detectives, and patrolmen. I would
suggest perhaps contacting one, or all, three of the following groups the
St. Paul Landmark Center (They have a wonderful display of crime fighters
and gangsters of the 20's and 30's) the Mpls. Police Depart Achivist
(Historian) ... if they were not laid off with the current budget
conditions ... and THe Minnesota Historical Society ....

I'd try asking the Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis:
