Ty ty ty for the info on Jonas [Wharton] Holmes.. Can I ask you where
you obtained the info? I ask because we are considering subcribing to
Ancestry.com or a like site.. and am wondering which would be the
best. We are new at this, and trying so hard to put together a
complete "roots" pkg back to great grandparents, then further back as
warrented and/if info is available. Thank you again....

First, I recommend people fully learn to use the wonderful free websites
that are available, such as
cyndislist.com
rootsweb.net
familysearch.org
usgenweb.net
archives.gov
and may others

Then, check out your local Family History Centers (FHC), national archives
and public libraries.
All of the FHCs and many public libraries has a subscription to Ancestry.com
so you can use it there yourself to see what it has. YOu may even do
all your Ancestry.com work at those facilities for free.

Also check the libraries and archives for Heritage Quest. This pay service
only sells it to libraries, and in turn if you have a library card you can
use it for free. Some libraries only give cards to people who live in their
area, others don't care.

I know some people also like the pay service genealogy.com but it is much
the same thing as Ancestry and Heritage Quest.

Having said all the above, I encourage people to use the free resources. In
my case I have a library card that gives me access to Heritage Quest and I
have a subscription to Ancestry (for everything abt $220 a year)

All of the websites, free or pay, have limitations. Sometimes they won't pay
off, but you have to keep going back and rechecking, check a different way,
etc.

To answer your first question, I got the Jonas Holmes info from
FamilySearch.org, Rootsweb.net, Heritage Quest & Ancestry.com.
