I'm looking for some input on my next step in looking for the widow
of a Civil War veteran. I can't find her after 1865 when she filed for
his pension.
This is what I have, Andrew Jackson Capen died in 1865 in Salisbury
Prison, NC. His wife Rosannah (Smith) Capen filed for and was granted
a pension for $8 a month in 1865. She was living in Saginaw Co.,
Michigan with a post office address as Elsie, Clinton Co., MI. at the
time. In 1882 Andrew's father Nahum Capen filed for his pension
claiming Rosannah had remarried. There is no mention in the pension
files of where she is living in 1882. The pension claim on his part
was denied on the grounds that she survived him, but the pension file
makes no mention of where the payments were going or when they stopped
due to her death.
My questions are, is there a way to find where the parents went and
when they stopped. This has been a rather tangled web for me to figure
out as I'm not only related to Andrew by blood, but also Rosannah, as
well as the lawyer for Rosannah.
Any help or leads would be greatly appreciated.

How old was she? Where was she born? The reason I ask, is looking for
Rosannah Smith, one finds in the 1870 Census one Rosannah Smith age 59 who
was born in Ohio. Searching MI for Rosannah -- one finds 15 in 1870 with 5
being under the age of 18 .... may want to take a similar approach to the
surrounding states .... hmm only a suggestion ... hope that helps ...

Re: Civil War Pension files
I know where she was born and the year and her location in 1865.
Rosannah Smith born about 1842 in New York, living in Brady Twp,
Saginaw Co., in 1865. However I haven't been able to track her down
after that. The pension file I have makes no mention of her location
in 1882 when her father in law tried to claim the pension. But the
pension was denied on the grounds she survived him after ther war.
Would the pension be automatically be discontinued if she re-married?
I'm hoping to find a way to locate either where the payments went or
when and where they finally stopped. I know for a fact she died before
1905, so my time at least has a limit.

Re: Civil War Pension files
Ummm, if I'm correctly reading what you think they said ... Rosannah
outlived her husband. The pension was available to a parent /or/ to a
widow but both could not collect. Rosannah could have died the day
after the pension was granted or have remarried the the following month.
Either would exclude her F-i-L claiming a pension.
Question: have you read the *entire* pension file, or did you get just
the genealogical abstract? [Answer depends, I think, on how long ago you
got it.]
Also, the 1890 SPECIAL census should show her under her new married
name, if she had remarried by then.
