Veterans Benefits ?

Legg inn av LRESA500 » 25 aug 2004 07:37:22

My paternal grandfather, a WW I veteran died in Jan. 1960 when I was 8.
In 1962 my grandmother filed an application in Virginia to receive survivor
benefits. She was reluctant to do so since they had been separated but not
divorced for 25 years. But my dad and aunt insisted she apply. They gave her
retroactive benefits plus a small monthly check. I'm fairly certain this was
not social security but something to do with the military. Does anyone have an
idea what this benefit was?
Perhaps there is a record of my grandma's application. Thanks

Many years after the war some money was allocated for widows. The government
keeps all records of pension benefits so I would write to them.

You could check out the website for the branch of service your grandfather
was in. They should have explanations of benefits on their websites or if
not they might have links to websites that do have an explanation. I know
the Veterans' Administration has survivor benefits, but I don't think they
were around back in 1962. If you want to check out the VA website it's at
http://www.va.gov.

I worked for the VA about 12 years ago. There should be a record; it's
called a "claims folder." The money was either
1) a pension based on your mother's age and low income, or
2) it was due to an injury your grandfather sustained in WW1. This is
called a "service-connected disability."

Pension & compensation benefits do go back that far.

Contact your local VA office & ask for his service records, death
certificate, etc. The form for requesting the records might be on the VA
website. You'll have to give them his date of birth and death, at least the
date he entered & was released from the service. Your grandfather's records
are almost certainly stored in one of the many Federal Archives Record
Centers aka, "FARC"

Veterans' claims were filed on a "VA Form 526" and the folder should have
his discharge papers (DD-214) and proof of death. Your grandmother's death
certificate is probably in the file as well. The death certs will also show
their parents, as well.

Some folders were destroyed in a fire in the '50s but most were not.
