Has anyone done the genealogy of Lord Charles Cornwallis, from England and a
commander in the American Revolutionary War?

Isn't he descended from Cromwell or did I get that wrong?

You can find information on Lord Cornwallis at several sites, such as:

http://jrshelby.com/kimocowp/cornwal.htm

http://www.wordiq.com/definition/Charles_Cornwallis

You could try searching using various combinations of his name
(Cornwallis, Lord Cornwallis, Lord Charles Cornwallis, etc.). Those two
sites are from some of the hits I received when doing a google search
using 'Lord Cornwallis". And, no, he wasn't descended from Cromwell,
although Cornwallis was related to one of the Prime Ministers of England.

Hope that helps,

Cathy

What about U.S. Grant? I read his line came from a Matthew & Priscilla
Grant, Puritans who emigrated to America in 1630 aboard the Mary & Charles.
Where were they from before that?

A google search for "Ulysses S. Grant+genealogy" turned up about one
page of decent hits. Unfortunately, none of them go past Matthew Grant.
The most that's mentioned for him is that he and his wife boarded
their ship in Plymouth, England. U.S. Grant does have a Simpson ancestor
who is supposedly from Ireland, and that is mentioned on one of the
sites, but it's unknown just which Simpson ancestor was the Irsh immigrant.

The two sites are:

http://saints.css.edu/mkelsey/gene.html

http://www.lib.siu.edu/projects/usgrant/ahg-genea.html

A big drawback to what's on those pages is that no sources are cited.
For instance, an exact marriage date for Matthew and Priscilla is given,
but it's not mentioned where the marriage too place, and doesn't give
Priscilla's maiden name. There's a link from one of the sites for a
newspaper article from 1899 on Grant genealogy and it makes a lot of
assumptions about Grant's ancestry, but again, no proof is given of
anything.

The Passenger and Immigration Lists Index, 1500s-1900s at ancestry.com
gives Priscilla's maiden name as Grey, but it doesn't list from where in
England the couple came from.
