Edward halton 1880 lookup problem!!

Legg inn av yankee DOODLE » 21 aug 2004 04:43:50

I am researching a family member who dies in 1902. His name appears in the
1880 census when I go to view it I CANNOT see it on the page.

He is listed as living in providence, yet the top of the census page reads
WESTERLY! thats at the other end of the state. I even tried looking thru 25
pages where I found Edwards brother Peter in Providence.

Anyone have any ideas?????

Thanks

Using the census information that ancestry.com does have, I was able to

find Edward at genealogy.com

For some reason, it appears that that part of Providence has been mixed
up with Westerly.

Anyway, Edward Halton is a boarder in the household of Sarah Riley, a 28
year old widow, born in Ireland. She's the mother of two children, and
she has a LOT of boarders. Her household starts on

Rhode Island, PROVIDENCE, Roll 1211 Book 1, Page 110a (district 6)

and ends on

Rhode Island, PROVIDENCE, Roll 1211 Book 1, Page 110a (district 6)

Edward Halton is listed as being 26, born in Ireland, and a brick mason.
I'd send you the images, but my e-mail and genealogy.com aren't
getting along right now. But I'm confident that someone will get those
pages to you.

You can let ancestry.com know about the error, but I'm not sure if
they'll do anything about it. It seems that past reports of inaccurate
indexing and linking has gone uncorrected, but you never know when they
might decide to actually make things right.

You can just go to the page step-by-step instead of accepting the bad link
on Ancestry. The correct page is in Providence, District 6, Image 29.

On Ancestry's index page, before you click through to the image, at the
bottom it tells you the info you need to get to the page:

Image Source: Year: 1880; Census Place: Providence,
Providence, Rhode Island; Roll:
T9_1211; Family History Film:
1255211; Page: 110B; Enumeration
District: ; Image: 229.

In this instance, the Enumeration District isn't filled in, but clicking
into a few districts at random and checking the page numbers soon gets you
to the right place.
