Help finding a Prussian Location
I've run into a problem finding the town where my husband's grandfather was
born. On his WWI Draft Card he lists his birthplace a Chitomaar, Prussia.
Does anyone have any idea where that would be? He came to the US around
1917.

JewishGen ShtetlSeeker at http://www2.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm
finds some similary spelled towns, such as Schotmar and Sotmar, Germany.
Also Shitomir, Zhitomir, and Zhytomyr, Ukraine. You might take a look at
the site, and see the other towns that are mentioned.
What is the surname of your husband's grandfather? Do you have his ship
immigration information?

Re: Help finding a Prussian Location
Hello Taz,
I'm not seeing much like Chitomaar in Germany, but it could be a
transcription or spelling issue. You might try finding some other
records that may give the town name. If he came in 1917 the passenger
record might give the town...
Finding Passenger Lists 1820-1940s (arrivals at US Ports)

If he became a US citizen you could also try finding his naturalization record...
Finding US Naturalization Records (a genealogy guide)
http://home.att.net/~wee-monster/natura ... cords.html
Good luck with your search.
Regards,
Joe

Re: Help finding a Prussian Location
Are these the Wollmanns from Hutchinson, SD? If so, you have 4 spellings of
the town to choose from on 4 different draft registrations, probably all
brothers. To me, they look like:
Chitomear, Wolyniea, Russia
Chitomai, Woliniea, Russia
Shatnor, Volinan, Russia
Chitomaar, Russia (typed)
As near as I can figure, this would put ZHITOMIR/SHITOMIR/JITOMIR/ZHYTOMYR
(depending on who's doing the spelling) Ukraine as your best bet.

I am with Tara on this one. Many of the Woolmann (Woolman) immigrants on
Ellis Island listing show to be from Russia.

Thank you Tara. He was in Menno SD, if that is near Hutchinson then it's
the right ones. The typed one is his grandfather. when I magnifie his
draft card, the P and R are two letters crammed together. He also on the
Census put Prussia, and later in life said he was German. I think he may
have been born in a part of Prussia, the later became Russia, and his
family that stayed in Europe all lived near Frankfort later in life. I
didn't see the other draft cards. I guess who ever took the information
guessed at the spelling, but you have given me a place to start looking.

Re: Help finding a Prussian Location
I mistyped yesterday. I should have put Hutchinson *County.* Menno is in
Hutchinson County. Just from the little bit I read yesterday, it does look
like that area of what is now Ukraine changed hands a lot, mainly between
Germany, Poland and Russia if I understood it right. There are 11 Wollmann
WWI draft cards in Hutchinson County available on Ancestry. If you ever want
copies, let me know. The quality isn't great, but sometimes they're helpful.

Re: Help finding a Prussian Location
Tara,
I wanted to thank you publicly for sending me the Draft Cards as Albert
helped me find my husband's grandfather on the 1920 census, and with him and
Albert were their parents. Until now we thought they had stayed in Europe.
Thank you again for that key.
